Default A question about chopping down a tree

Hi all,

A friend - let's call him Mister Jubbly - lives in Perth and has a tree in his front garden, within his property boundary. The tree was there when he bought the house.

Mister Jubbly is getting increasingly annoyed with the tree, as it sheds its leaves at an alarming rate, all year round, and he seems to spend half his friggin' life gathering up the leaves from his lawn and borders.

Anyway, Mister Jubbly made a comment about chopping the MoFo down but someone said that he isn't allowed to without council permission. Does anyone know if this is true ?

You Certainly need to in some if not all council boundaries.

Crikey !

Okay, thanks. I suppose I'd better check with the council first.

Bummer.

Don't know about Perth but the rule here in Vic is if the diameter is under 500 mm you can chop it.

Cut the thing down and when the council comes around blame it on Mr Jubbly.

Are there any rules about pruning, severe pruning?

Around here you're not even supposed to do that. Only the Energex butchers have the right to come and stuff up your trees without asking.

ring-bark it.
Paint a huge fluorescent member on it and report it to police as vandalism.
When it's dead you can chop it down.

Well neither worked on a couple of sodding great palm tree things (don't know what type). The chain saw came out about six months later, after ensuring that the treehugger across the road had gone out.

Climb up the tree and scream repeatedly to the media that you're not coming down until the council promises they won't cut the tree down. Live up there for a few weeks until they get a court order to remove both you and the tree. Presto! Tree gone and you get some free media coverage.

Good Lord, in Canberra they really do have the tree police and if you take an axe (or chainsaw) to one which has been identified by them as being "significant to the streetscape" then you can be fined lots of money! Best idea is to make it sick - very sick ie dead by some other nefarious means (but dont leave the holes showing at all!) or hope that it catches something fatal.
