Queensland - possible Tropical Low developing
Early heads up - Tropical Low building in the Coral Sea off the north Queensland coast, likely to be bringing an increase in wind and rain as we get towards the weekend. At present expected to move towards the coast from Sunday.........
Unclear at the moment whether it will develop further and become a Tropical Cyclone but conditions are looking favourable for that to happen, so anyone up north.....also unclear at the moment whereabouts it is likely to come onshore. Will certainly bring a lot of rain with it nto already saturated ground. keep your eyes peeled and get your cyclone kit stocked up. http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml |
Re: Queensland - possible Tropical Low developing
Queensland could be in for more bad weather as forecasters warn activity in the Coral Sea in the far north could become a cyclone.
Weather bureau forecaster Brian Rolstone there are virtually no fine areas over Queensland and a tropical low is developing off the coast, east of Cairns. "It might move in too fast before it gets to tropical cyclone level - it might just be a tropical low and that's about all," he said. "But it's still going to produce increasing rainfall along that north-east coast there." |

Bureau forecast chart for the next 4 days.
Whether this becomes a Cyclone or remains a Low it will bring a large amount of rain to the northern half of the State, including areas already saturated, and battered from TC Yasi. Current outlook for the Coral Sea - A weak low lies in the far northeast Coral Sea. The low is expected to move slowly southwest over the next few days with a moderate chance of developing into a cyclone on Sunday. At the present time, the low is not influencing Queensland's weather. Friday: Very low Saturday: Very low Sunday: Moderate |

Been rainiing gently all day here. :) Current Low is off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The low is expected to move slowly southwest over the next few days. It is very weak, but its now expected to interact with a SE change on Monday and deepen as a result, how much it deepens is still anyone's guess. Where it moves when that happens is also anyone's guess......... It'll be sitting east of Cairns on Sunday, very much a case of watch and wait. Also highly likely that another Low is following along behind...... Whatever it does though there is a lot of rain heading for the northern half of the State (Mackay northwards), maybe upwards of 200-300mm in 24-48hrs. |

Depends on wind. Darwin airport was shut for a day on their last cyclone which was small but dropped a lot of rain.

Barring a catastophic and unexpected change. Heavy rain forecast but thats it at present. The Low is sitting well off the coast and is still debating what it wants to do - if it does go cyclonic it'll be after Monday morning now that it affects the coast. Cairns is well used to nasty weather and we (at work) have had no indications from them that the airport is likely to close. You should be fine for Monday  |

Looks like I had better pack the raincoat.
Any good food recommendations along the esplanade?

Any good food recommendations along the esplanade? Food recommendations? No idea, sorry, only been there once, and I have no idea where we ate - I was with a crowd from work who knew it better than me; I remember one bistro-type place called Rattle and Hum, noisy but good pizzas and good choice of beers/ciders. I was with a group of colleagues I only knew through phone calls before that night, we had an absolute ball and I seem to have acquired a lot of Brownie Points for managing to keep up with some very hardened drinkers  Have a look at some of the threads on Cairns, there have been several people asking about going up there on holiday so there must be some recommendations in there somewhere!! |

Any good food recommendations along the esplanade? The Salt House is very good, not cheap & is also a good place for a drink. They often have live music at the weeknds. This is at the far end of the Esplanade, past The Pier shopping centre where there are also some good restaurants & lively bars. The night markets are meant to be good for Chinese food although I haven't eaten there myself. Villa Romana is good if you like Italian. Hope that helps!:) |

A monsoon trough is expected to sit just off the FNQ coast for a few days next week, so expect plenty off road closures between ingham and cooktown and with 500mm possible in some places its going to be wet.
