DFAT number for Australians concerned about family and friends in Japan - 1300 555 135

Large areas of Japan's northern Pacific coast have been swamped by a devastating tsunami, engulfing entire towns following a major 8.9 offshore quake.

The meteorological agency issued its top-level evacuation alerts for the entire Japanese coast, warning of a tsunami of up to six metres.

Towns and farms around Sendai city in northern Japan are being engulfed by a tsunami, and a four-metre wave has swamped parts of Kamaishi on the Pacific coast.
The quake, already considered one of the worst in Japan's history, struck about 382 kilometres north-east of Tokyo at a depth of 24 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Australia is listed on the current Pacific Warning Centre bulletins. These are NOT official bulletins for Australia. Any official warning for here will come from the BoM.

Officially now listed as an offshore earthquake of a magnitude of 8.9 centred occurred 130 kilometres east of Sendai, Japan at 1746 AEDST (1446 Tokyo time). Tsunami has struck the northeast coast of the main island of Honshu, Japan.
- earthquake and subsequent tsunami has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure in the Miyagi prefecture and surrounding areas.
- landlines are now operative, however mobile phone networks are subject to disruption
- internet communications are working
- trains and subways are not operating and Narita International Airport has been closed as a precautionary measure
- There are no known fatalities in Tokyo (at this time) although there has been damage to infrastructure and buildings

8,000 times bigger than one that rocked Christchurch last month

Telegraph is running a page with updates here

midnight Aussie time - 200-300 bodies found in Sendai :(
