Places of Interest - Melboure to Sydney
Hi All,
We are going on a driving trip from Melbourne to Sydney along the coastal Route 1 next week and was hoping you guys might have some suggestions of what to see, places to stop and eat etc.
Day trips and tours are out as we just haven't got the time and we do have short attention spans
So far we have the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre...

I've done the drive a few times. More familiar with the NSW side but in Victoria we liked the area around Lakes Entrance (Metung was gorgeous) but not Lakes Entrace itself which is a bit tacky. There's a fantastic view of the Lakes just before you drive down into the town - so definitely stop at the lookout.
On the NSW side, Eden has an interesting whaling history and is in a fantastic location. If you're there at dinner time the Fisherman's Club is recommended for really good fish and seafood. Merimbula is also really attractive and quite a busy place - full of Victorians mostly.
The drive north from Merimbula through the Bega Valley is nice and scenic. Cobargo is a cute little place worth a stop for decent coffee. Tilba Tilba has a wonderful garden (Foxglove Spires) and Central Tilba just up the road is a real gem. The whole place is dead cute and listed with the National Trust. Heaps of little shops to browse in and loads of places for lunch.
Bateman's Bay is a good place to stop overnight. Nice restaurant on the water's edge (called Blank Canvas) that we've eaten at a few times. Also stop at Pretty Beach which is about 10k off the highway north of Bateman's Bay. It has parrots flying around and kangaroos lying around on the beach. Definitely spare an hour or so to stop off there.
Further north, Milton is good for lunch or decent coffee as is Berry, of course (more gift and coffee shops than you can poke a stick at). Also stop at the blowhole in Kiama - even better if the weather is rough.
Take the coast road through Wollongong to Stanwell Park (rather than the main road which climbs the escarpment) and you get to go on the newish Seacliff Bridge which is built over the ocean.
Have fun - it's a great drive.
