I think that owners should be forced to apply for a licence to keep a dog, and that it should only be granted if they have a clean record AND attend dog training classes. Owners need to be educated. If the dog is a nuisance, then rangers, animal societies/police should have the power of instant confiscation, and the owners have to pay a fine to get the dog back. This applies whether the dog is large or small. Personally I dislike small yappy dogs, especially those that are dressed up as a fashion accessory or treated as though they are a spoiled child. I dislike the owners even more!! Dogs need to have a purpose other than being a fashion icon- it sets such a bad example.

And while I am on my high horse, dogs should never be displayed in pet shop windows- it just encourages pester power, often without thought as to how to look after the animal, or where it was bred, what temperament it is etc.... it is sometimes treated in the same way as a toy at Christmas - demanded, played with for 10 mins, then neglected.

This dog isn't a Pit Bull - it's a mastiff cross, which can be lethal depending on which breeds are being used.

Pit Bulls are largely NOT dangerous dogs. It's the breeder/owner.

I agree only partly with this. I see these things on the beach sometimes, often pulling a woman along behind them, and I think if that thing went for me it's over. I'm over six foot and a good weight, but I have seen pictures of fully grown men literally torn apart by pit bulls. They are selected genetically for their strength and aggression, because they were bred to fight and kill.

Having said that, it is the case that many of the people who desire pit bulls are aggressive morons (not all, I stress), as can be seen simply by seeing who has them out on the streets. So the problem we have here is that aggressive moron + dog bred for killing large creatures = a very dangerous situation. Until the punishment for these dog attacks is equivalent to manslaughter or even murder they will continue. In my view if your dog is what the law describes as a dangerous dog and it savages a child to death then you should serve a full life term.

I just add in edit that Australia has banned the importation of these creatures with a view to restricting their number, but it's not enough. Other countries have banned them outright, like the Netherlands, Germany, France, Denmark and several others. Civilised countries, basically. I don't think Britain has acted against them at all.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. These dogs only look like meat heads, they are less aggressive than those little ankle snapper yappy things.
