In theory, low results (or extremely high ones) are supposed to trigger some action that there's an issue that needs sorting out.

What did your school do/say when you tried to talk to them about this? Are you getting support for him outside school?
The support we give our dyslexic child outside school is to boost his confidence and feelings of self worth and to promote self sufficiency and community participation. We do NOT have accademic support out of school hours. For a child who is exhausted by the academic school day (dyslexic children work harder than 'other's just to be last in the class).... We are NOT subjecting him to more of the same... He IS able to function in society, and he WILL be getting an apprenticeship. He is 15 at christmas and does not intend to go on with fulltime classroom based education.

there's an interesting story about the rabbits, owls and squirrels who went to the school in the forrest. The teacher madde them sit a NAPLAN test... She discovered that the rabbits were no good at climbing trees, the squirrels weren't flying well enough and the owls struggled with burrowing... So she organised extra lessons in burrowing for the owls and cut their flying lessons. She had a tutor provide extra tree climbing for the rabbits and set flying homework for the squirrels in her class...

Now I may be a bit of a squirrel myself... But I KNOW my child.

Dyslexic son in grade 12 now, we have paid thousands to get a formal diagnosis, it was all done by an english lady, its all private, medicare, private health ins, education dept pay no part of it.

The outcome is a statement, mainly about discrimination, the school give him extra time in exams, thats it really, however we are still to find out if this will be allowed in final grade 12 exams but it appears not.

To cap it off, despite the statement he will still be marked down for spelling errors in all of the grade 12 tests, exams etc

The whole thing shatters their confidence, to work so hard but be marked down for something they cannot help.

Gorgeous has a statement. Its not worth the paper it was written on.

You're so right about shattering confidence.

Do they not do Special Consideration forms at his school? At ours, if you're off for any length of time the teachers concerned sign off on SC and either judge the student by prior work or an average. Same happens with statemented kids at exam times. The SC goes off with the exam paper.

We too have spent huge amounts of money and time for support, academic being only a part of that. It is totally unacceptable that a child sits in class, day after day, month after month, etc, not getting what he or she needs in the classroom and is then expected to do more learning outside school. Even more so when they tire easily (mine too has that problem), in fact, I would use the word cruel. In my child's case, the school were giving him and other kids a 2nd lot of classwork, when all they needed to do was give the right level in the first place. Meanwhile, some schools elsewhere in Perth will be doing the right thing.

Today's Courier Mail.....
STUDENTS were asked to re-write their NAPLAN answers and fill in missing ones after they completed the exams last year, documents reveal.

As about 230,000 Queensland students get ready to sit the 2011 national exams next week, the extent of cheating and security breaches which took place on the 2010 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) tests at some state schools can be revealed.

It is understood more cheating or security/protocol breach allegations were made in Queensland than any other state or territory on the 2010 tests.

Right to Information documents obtained by The Courier-Mail reveal one Queensland state school principal admitted students were removed from class after NAPLAN exams not just last year, but the years before, to allow them to complete answers.
