Agree. You think it's just going to be a flat, boring nothing (and much of it is) but parts are just absolutely stunning. I think the harsh, unrelenting climate is part of the appeal. I don't think you can get a handle on the scale and vastness of the place without going. I would never want to live in the Pilbara but do enjoy my work trips up there

here we have a flashbutt rail welder. 25m lengths of rail are welded into 400m lengths (called strings). These are loaded onto the rail train which drops them off at selected renewal sites around the pilbara. The grubby looking train in the middle is the rail grinder. This grinds existing rail back to the correct profile, and removes potential crack start points.
