I once told a patient that I would route around in my draws for something, then realised what I had said, luckily they were scots and understood..... Oh and a group of ladies now use, loosing my rag as they think its funny.

Yes, when I was 12 my mother once told me to have a root in the cupboard and my kiwi friend was shocked, as this was the 70s and to have a root meant to have sex.

I remember calling my dad a tw*t once I was only about 13 and hadn't heard of the word but meant to say twit but it came out wrong. My brother nearly died and dragged me off to explain what I'd said

I reckon the old root joke is well overused by amused newly arrived Poms. I confess I slipped it in intentionally a few times but I innocently made sure it COULD be misconstrued.

I think a lot of Australians know what you actually mean from the context especially if it was obvious you were looking for something.

I have a sweatshirt from Canada that says "Roots" on the front. Also my camera case is from Roots. It's a large clothing chain there so their logo is on all kinds of stuff.

I asked a friend if they were out on the pull....it seems I implied he was one who only enjoyed solitary pleasures!

My hubby nearly got punched when he asked a new workmate if he had any sprogs....seems sprogs does not mean children, instead it is the result of being 'on the pull' Aus style!
