Default Perth foreshore, Elizabeth Quay or Aboriginal name?

"Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi says Colin Barnett's decision to call the Perth waterfront Elizabeth Quay is potentially divisive and a missed chance to promote WA."

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-...ce-lord-mayor/

Some controversy that it wasn't given an aboriginal name, what do you all think?

On a side note here is our Mayor, what a hottie!

What happened to Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass?

Just googled it and am sad to hear about all his personal tragedy. His dad delivered me, all my siblings and some of my nieces and nephews and cared for my mother through a long battle with cervical cancer. He stayed in touch with her until her death - she had been in his care for almost 40 years - he was a lovely man.

As for your original question, I voted for an aboriginal name for the home of the Waugal.

If it's Aboriginal land then it should have an Aboriginal name, if it's not then it doesn't matter. imo of course. Not that it's anything to do with me of course.

I couldn't find what the aboriginal name might have been.

I guess you'd need to know what it was before deciding whether it's better than Elizabeth Quay. I don't think picking an aboriginal name just because it's aboriginal is a good idea, it's unfair to the majority of non-aboriginals.

I think another suggestion would be to honour the next queen - Camilla Quay.

I spent many Friday nights there with a magnum of Summer Wine, perhaps we could mix both cultures and it should be named Summer Woobla.

It's an okay name - I just wish they would get on with it. I can see this area from my office window, and there is f**k all going on.

I think naming it after the Queen in her jubilee year is a nice gesture.

I think they could have given it a Noongar name just to make it something distinctive and particular to Perth. We've got highways and all named after the captains, surveyors, explorers, governors who were historically linked with the area.

Elizabeth Quay could be in any city. There's nothing that says "Perth" when you hear it. And if it's after the Queen, then put "Queen" in the front. Queen Elizabeth Quay. Better. Elizabeth Quay sounds like someone's name. What Elizabeth? My auntie Elizabeth?

Someone on ABC yesterday said it's the Swan River, so Swan Quay, as in swanky...
