Default Party food

We're having a party on Saturday evening for all our friends. Can you give me some suggestions for party food?

I don't want big bowls of stuff (the usual rice salad and potato salad) .. more like canapés but I don't want anything that's going to tie me up in the kitchen all day preparing!

(I'm not at all demanding really!)

Got any good links, suggestions or recipes?

Thank you !

Yes, that would keep the preparation to a minimum, but my nearest one is a good half hour away in MK. Is it really worth it, I ask myself?

probably not - but tesco's/sainsbury's and iceland do a party range don't they - or is that just at xmas. you could be really boring and serve the usual cocktail sausages, sausage rolls and quiche - cheese and pineapple on a stick. There's the crudities with dips - vary it with different raw veg, pitta bread etc, small crackers with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Vol-au-vents with interesting fillings.

I'll have to think about this one

No. Nothing on earth would get me shopping in MK.

Tapas is always a good option.

Try www.uktvfood.co.uk and in the search menu put tapas and several ideas come up.

I also do the following which you may find easier and/or do it with a couple of tapas dishes.

Cover a very large tray or board with foil and then I put on it about 3 really good cheeses (a brie, blue and a hard cheese) then some dates, almonds, grapes, strawberries, crackers, quince paste (or something similar) and if I am doing this for a dinner party without doing a dessert course I also put on some small belgium chocolates and truffels.

a selection of black and green marinated olives always goes down well.

A plate of antipasto, pate & crackers, fresh vege slices (carrot, celery etc) with an accompanying dip, lightly battered anchovies pan fried in extra virgin olive oil (they cook very quickly, so just a min or so each side)

Thought this link might help. It's Australian so look out for the metric converter link on right hand side of page if needed.
