You can keep flour in the freezer?!? I never knew that. Does it require defrosting before you use it?

 I like your thinking, bloo!

Spartacus - my sis was telling me the other day not to store coffee in freezer. Just found this info here: http://www.coffeeam.com/stgrandbrco.html

"Some people store their coffee in the freezer thinking it is going to keep the coffee fresh. Here are a couple of reasons why storing coffee in your freezer is a bad idea:

* Coffee is porous. This is a good thing for fans of flavored coffee as the beans absorb the coffee flavoring syrups and oils that are used to make flavored coffee. However, if given the chance, coffee can also absorb other things like the flavor of seafood or the moisture that your freezer produces. This moisture will in turn deteriorate the coffee and even make it taste like, well... like a freezer.
* When coffee is roasted, the beans release their oils and essences to give the coffee its distinct flavor. You'll notice these oils are more prominent on dark-roasted coffee and espresso. When you break down these oils by freezing, you are removing the flavor."

cheers

They taste nice in an omlette.

Wilgar, this is what I did when I had a house infestation:

I went to Ikea, bought 5 packs of multiple-sized plastic tubs, and decanted all packet food into them. Every bag of flour, sugar, spices, you name it... everything of food origin in our house is either in the fridge or an airtight container. Oh, and I bought a label maker and put labels on all of these containers.

Follow my advice and you will never again be infested. And no nasty chemical involved, either!

Good luck!

Not true unfortunatly I had exact same problem and containers are no good as they are already in the food when packaged. I have had the maggoty type things in a sealed unopened packet when I opened it. Did see a thing about it and you need to put the food when you have bought it into the freezer overnight (flour, sugar, dried stuff) and it kills the eggs. Also if you get the small moth type things in your pantry you have them. kill them before they lay eggs or you will be back to square one. Fingers crossed 1 year on I have remained clear.

Re: Pantry Infestation

Urgggggghhh.... weavils are dirty little things. We had an infestation before Christmas (first noticed maggots in flour when I was sifting it - extra protein in the mince pies :)). We threw out every bit of dried food in the place that wasn't properly sealed. Once we discovered what they were and began looking in bags of pasta, rice, dried herbs, gravy granules, you name it, we kept finding them.

So we chucked all dried food, emptied all cupboards and scrubbed them out with a vinegar and water solution. We had to examine the walls and ceiling too because we found little cocoons in the corners of the ceiling with them in it.

From then we don't buy in bulk anymore, just buy 1kg bags of most dried food. Also, as someone else said, I put flour or sugar or whatever in the freezer overnight when I buy it because that kills the eggs if they're in it already. Also we keep all dried food in sealed containers now.

It's the only way to make sure that if you do buy something again that has weavils in it, it won't spread to other food. We did this before going home for Christmas and came back to just find two dead moths in the cupboard and touch wood, nothing since.

They are absolutely revolting though and spread like wildfire so make sure you catch them all...
