One of my very first heroes......
Happy Birthday Andy Pandy :o:lol:
Andy Pandy, the children's TV character, has become a senior citizen 60 years after the show was first broadcast on BBC. The show, which was first aired as part of the BBC's For the Children schedule in July 1950, celebrated its milestone on Sunday. Since the first broadcast Andy, who started life as a puppet, has become a computer-generated cartoon but he has not aged a day and still wears the same stripy pyjamas. |

Re: One of my very first heroes......
I remember admiring John Noakes and that Peter Duncan bloke off Blue Peter who everyone said looked like my brother. And so he does.
One bloke who I admire is Ranulph Fiennes - not the actor - the other one. My first hero - stop sniggering at the back - was Captain Oates of the Antarctic party in 1912.... Even now when I slip out for the firewood on a cold night I think of him! |
Re: One of my very first heroes......
John Lydon, Suggs and Blondie were my first. Even so young, I had good taste ;):D

I once read that Oates was so dumb that he probably really believed he was just nipping out for a while !!
I just reread Fienne's updated autobiography which I first read 20 years ago which reminded me he wrote a fairly recent book to counter a nasty revisionist history of Scott which came out in the late 70s. |

That reminds me - I want to reread some of the accounts. I first read one aged 10.

Truly fascinating era and the toughness of some of the men is just startling. Shackleton's walk across South Georgia is unimaginable.
