Olympic Stadium

The Times

Matt Dickinson Chief Sports Correspondent

For the first time since that indelibly uplifting summer of 2012, I wandered through the Olympic Park this week. The memories came flooding back as, for £11 between four of us, we swam in the very pool where Michael Phelps made history.

For another £22 each (including bike and helmet hire, and an hour’s group tuition), we cycled around the wooden velodrome of Sir Chris Hoy’s epic triumph and Victoria Pendleton’s tears, feeling the thrill of defying gravity on its daunting 42-degree wooden banks.

Perhaps one day, too, we will sit again in the stadium where Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis and Greg Rutherford put the Super into Saturday, and Usain Bolt danced down the track into immortality, although I may resent paying that entrance fee. When West Ham United reopen the doors, me, you — all of us — should be demanding a free ticket given everything we have already put into that ground.

Hi Ballys,

Just a friendly heads up, to save space, instead of copying the whole article verbatim, copy the http:// where the magnifying glass is at at the top the browser and paste it in the space - like so http://britishexpats.com/forum/newre...e=1&p=11530031
This creates a link and you can put your own comments (e.g. interesting article etc etc) about the article without taking up too much space (like in this case), so readers can understand why you posted it.

In fairness, there's no other team more deserving of it we're a national treasure, and nothing pleases me more than Spurs fans paying for it

So the owners of WHU made a good investment decision when they bought the club - good for them. Football after all is a business (something that many fans forget). If it doesn't make money it fails, just like any other business

If the authorities are gifting this stadium to WHU then that's their issue, not the club's. Maybe they should have thought about the future when they were planning the Olympics. London 2012 was supposed to be different as they said that they would not repeat the mistakes of past games. It looks like this is not so

Indeed, I don't think West Ham should be criticised at all,....................the Government on other hand......

Now let me see....The Emirates Stadium cost GBP 390 million for a 60,270 seated capacity. The cost for West Ham's gift from the taxpayer is GDP 619 million (and still rising) for a 54,000 seated capacity. I hope everyone enjoyed the 17 days it was used for the sports carnival.

It was us, Leighton Orient, or some team called sperrs. If spurs got it the track would've been kept so the fans would at least have something interesting to watch :)

Re: Olympic Stadium

Alpari West Ham's shirt sponsor to the tune of GBP 3mil a year, owing the Club some GBP 4mil for seasons past has just gone bust. After the State sponsorship of the ground, I'm sure that HM Revenue & Customs will pick up the tab and their logo will look fantastic on the claret & blue.

Breaking news: surveyors have found a fundamental flaw in the stadiums design..... the seats are facing the pitch.Speaking of the pitch it will surly have the lushest grass in Football because 1)The Ball will rarely come into contact it( Big Fat Sam's Hoofball). 2) The Shite that West Ham will play on it every fortnight or so.
