Out of nowhere, this thread popped up in Outlook again!

"Right", I said, "I'm gonna find out what an ODP is if it kills me"...

"Offshore Drilling Person" the internet tells me!
I always thought an offshore driller was a bloke who hangs around in certain bars in the hope of hooking up with another offshore driller!

I'm here!!
I'm now working in Sydney as an Anaesthetic Technician (like most of you lot noone knows what an ODP is here either!). We can only work in private hospitals, as the public hospitals haven't yet realised who we are or what we do (and out here it seems to be not a lot - the job is much easier than at home).
Issie - how are you coming out here? If you are de facto then you can get a job in any private hospital (probably very easily), or just go on their casual staff, or do agency. I have been sponsored by ASEPs agency who seem ok. I have been working mainly at one private hospital who may take over my sponsorship.
Any other questions, let me know

Is it very different to the UK...do you have as much responsibilty as an ODP there?

We dont have as much responsibility, we dont draw up drugs, or hold drug keys (usually kept in recovery anyway). There are wardsmen who help position and move the patient (who are great and they save my back), and the surgeons usually help too. The anaesthetists are very self sufficient also, so all in all, we do a bit less than at home, and have less responsibility.

However, most places Ive been are great, and the people are lovely, and of course Australia is great too!!

Check the anaesthetic machine, check the patients in, prepare airway stuff, assist anaesthetist putting patients to sleep, keeping them asleep and waking them up, etc etc.

That sounds similar to what Mike Stanton does on here.
