The NHS worth itself in gold, if only I appreciate it more..

Re: The NHS worth itself in gold, if only I appreciate it more..
As a nurse employed for the NHS for most of my career, I have never had better treatment outwith the NHS. I can't wait to go back and work for it!
Believe me, it is no fun being in Oz when your anything other than healthy.
I have a chronic condition which costs me a large fortune to monitor here AND the specialists out here have a completely different take on my diagnosis compared to the Uk. I trust the Uk system more and know that I had a far,far superior service there than here. Healthcare here is a money making machine -everyone taking their cut from the ill patients and constantly referring you on so that you have to pay for something else - as well as the referral!
Trust me - until you've been ill and had to rely on other health systems outwith the NHS - you don't realise how fortunate you are to have it.

I think the quality of NHS care depends where you live.
I've had quite a few operations both in the UK and in Singapore. In the UK I had them in Leeds via both the NHS and private healthcare - nothing but praise for the NHS and serious infections requiring 2nd ops 2/3 times going private.
Leeds however has teaching hospitals and IME excellent care and short waiting lists (at least when I lived there). My folks live in Cleveland and don't seem to have good NHS provision at all.
Private healthcare here in Sg seems to be far superior to the UK; I can usually see my GP at 10am and be with a specialist at noon, and it's a lot cheaper too (we don't have health insurance beyond emergencies, guess we'll need it in Oz!).
OP - I wish your husband well and you some peace of mind.

Sorry - I also completely disagree. Ive worked for the NHS for ten years and yes, it has it's faults BUT if you want to compare it to other healthcare services worldwide I think you'll find it is FAR more accessable and affordable and anything else that ends in "able"!

It definitely depends on the hospital.
I have heard some excellent reports on UCH and some dreadful ones on Northwick Park and Hemel Hempstead.
Luck of the draw I guess.
I asked my GP if I could have one extra ventolin inhaler as an emergency for taking abroad next week.
He said it 'was too expensive' and refused, however he gave me 100 nebules for my nebulizer which I dont use nor need.
I wanted one extra inhaler that was all, he said I would have to 'make do'. And this isnt the first time its happened either.

I have had excellent medical care in the UK and I have had terrible medical care in the UK. As others have said, it is luck of the draw. I can't comment on Australian health care but I am assuming that it is exactly the same. You can be unlucky. We have had to use the private system several times in the UK to pick up shortfalls in the NHS, we expect to have to do the same in Australia.

Just so you know PP, when in Oz, you will not need to see a doctor to get an inhaler, just go to the nearest pharmacy and ask for Ventolin, no prescription needed, will cost you about $10 per Ventolin.

I think that unfortunately the bad press always exceeds the good stories about the NHS as they don't make such great headlines. As someone who has worked in the NHS for 20 years & lived & worked abroad, I really do appreciate what we have. Also, from the perspective of a health professional who works very hard to maintain excellent standards of care in the NHS, I get really pi**ed off when people decide to slag off the NHS, lock, stock & barrel
Farideh - Hope you have some news of Chris. Hope he is feeling much better!
Best wishes to you both honey!
