New COVID rules for Australians who live overseas and visit Australia
New COVID rules for Australians who live overseas and visit home
The rule change quietly passed through federal Parliament this week, and has not been formally announced by the government.
Under the current rules, Australians have to seek permission to leave the country. Common reasons to leave are for work, urgent medical reasons, compassionate reasons or travel in the national interest.
Permissions can also be granted for a "compelling reason", with no intention to return for three months or longer.
The federal government argued it had closed a loophole, saying Australians looking to leave the country to return to their homes overseas had had plenty of time to do so.
Australians living abroad will now have to apply for permission to leave, the same as permanent residents and citizens currently living in Australia.

If you listen carefully you can hear them throwing away the keys to the prison gates........

I am going to apply. Go and live in Europe for 6 months while the tin foil hat wearing AstraZeneca fearers get their shit together.

Good luck. I'd be doing it too if I had some cash to support myself.

Early talk with the wife at this point. We would work, either take our jobs or get new ones. No point going into a British winter without things to do in the day time, and let's face it, there are only so many walks in the rain you can do.
It would be a perfect time. Europe is open, and while lockdown in Sydney is a very mild lockdown, and no one is really listening and complying, Sydney will open when the vaccine numbers are at a point, there are too many morons who still believe the nonsense about AstraZeneca so I feel we may hit 50 or 60% and that's it.
Then you have the rest of Australia to deal with and our freedoms are being decided by those premier comrade clowns in WA and QLD.
As for the kids well even though we are putting them in school every day in Sydney now, as its more important for them to interact than the risk of the tiny 300 cases a day, they are just doing the online learning, so it might be a good opportunity for them to do a bit of proper classroom schooling in the UK.
Weighing it all up, the hassle of getting all this going might be a bit much, but it certainly makes perfect sense to me. I don't need to be waiting for everyone in Europe to get off their anti vaxxing and vaccine shopping arses. They have already done it.

Any update?
It's looking like I may need to depart this gilded cage towards the end of the year, so keen to see how others have managed it.
