Default The New Coles advert anyone?

Hi,

Havent posted in a while, but thought id see if anyone noticed the rather uncomfortable copycat of the new coles ad with Aussie "Clint" the chef in it, trying to go all Jamie Oliver in the supermarket and cooking for "mum". Focussing on the $10 feed your family, it was such a rip off of the Sainsburys adverts of similar ilk (feed family for a fiver) i'd be surprised if the legal team at Sainsburys are not already preparing a lawsuit.

It's not exactly impinging on their market is it. Jamie Oliver does not have the copyright on doing basic food.

Sorry Curtis, not Clint !!

What has doing basic food got to do with it and of course he doesn't have the right, thanks for clarifying that Captain Obvious.

I meant the actual advert itself, it had the same pitch.

There have been a lot of advert's over the years which have been copied from the UK. Dewsons (when it was) used to do the recipe adverts exactly the same as the Sainsbury ones, same back ground music, everything. I remember one for a so called 'high street bank' and all that had been changed was the accent. Actors were the same, we could actually see Barclays Bank in the back ground, yet it was dubbed with an Australian accent. I think perhaps this is allowed through royalty payments or such like?

These sorts of ads have been around in Aus for years how do we know that Sainsbury's did not copy Coles

This particular campaign has been on for a while now in their monthly free magazines.

Same advertising agencies look after all the big name companies.

There's no law against copying ideas. You can't use the same script, or the same footage etc. But you can use the idea.

The Coles add is really annoying, bad acting and the guy needs a shave.

Another ghastly advert ... makes me want to vomit almost as much as KFC ads ... Brand Power are crap but at least they have presenters with decent knockers.

They should prepare a lawsuit for breach of shite ideas and marketing. They can all f'off with their shiny families and 'fresh food people' bollocks. <mumble mumble, whiskey burp>.

There could be a case for a breach of intellectual property rights if it was too similar though.

I.e. the expression of the idea rather than the idea itself.

Only if it is protected by patent. Otherwise bad luck.

Ha ha. You are right about him being a wanabee Jamie Oliver. My God, they both have a mouth deformity too! I would not be able to eat anything Jamie prepared for fear that he had gobbed all over it with his ridiculously oversized tongue.

A number of the Coles higher management are from the UK. There has been a big recruitment drive for store managers in the UK, apparently. Our store manager is from the UK and the rumour is that he is on $300k. Seems a bit high to me, but who knows.
So no real surprise there is a lot of UK influence in everything they do.
