Yep that's exactly how my folks worked out the value of stuff when they did their circumnavigation. Mum used the price of basic stuff like a chicken or a kilo of carrots. My dad used the cost of a pint of beer as a % of the average hourly rate.
Noumea being the most expensive place on earth they bought anything.
Venezuela the cheapest;)
