It is closer to the reality than the current exchange rate...cost of living costs should be compared using percentage of wage it costs to buy something...using the exchange rate is mathematically wrong...which makes most of the comparisons on this thread using the exchange rate pointless unless spending Aussie dollars in the UK, or pounds in Australia.

Certain people just don't want to accept that message.
Anyhow. If I were to move back to the UK tomorrow, I'd have as much in my bank account from working in Oz for the last 2 years that it would take me to accumilate from working for nearly 5 years in the UK.

Comparing our specific lives in England to our specific lives in South Australia, for us, these things are cheaper:
Petrol
Council tax
Rent (massively so)
Water (we don't pay it, our landlord does, but we know the rate is cheaper)
Meat & dried food
Electricity (still cheaper despite massive increase)
Gas
Local house prices
Brand new cars (we're considering buying one next year I think, possibly)
Health service contributions
Restaurant meals
Cinema
Wine (bought from cellar door)
Our wages are much stronger in Australia, and we have fewer deductions from our salaries and the pension contributions from employers is significantly more generous. Almost double in fact.
Things we find more expensive:
Books
Fish
Fruit & Vegetables
Domestic & international flights
Second-hand cars
Clothes (if you're stupid enough to buy them in Australia)

Sporting event tickets (which sometimes even includes transport to and from venue for some sports)
