Are my views 'out dated'?
Just felt the need to ask this question.... I always thought I would be a progressive thinking parent but recently felt that this is not the case....
So - one night stands - ok? No cheating involved - free single young folk...Is it different and more acceptable for a bloke or a woman? Your views please. |
Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
It is just the same.

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
Depends on the circumstyances but generally ok, for both guys and girls.

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
Sadly, I think a woman who regularly has one night stands is regarded worse than a man who does the same... though neither is regarded highly imo.
I don't think it's what people think or moral standards that are the issues with one night stands... rather the potential risks associated with having sex with a relative stranger (ie physical/emotional dangers or health risks.) People do it. They survive. It's just a risk probably best avoided if possible. All the best. :) |

Fine, so long as the female isn't my daughter.
I am not sure if this view is outdated though. But if it is - then I have to accept my views are 'out dated'. |

I don't think the question was on regular one night stands. An occasional one is fine and very common. I'd say it wouyld be hard to find someone who hasn't had one.
I try not to judge but find it very difficult. |
Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
I prefer girl on girl. Is it more acceptable than bloke on bloke?
|
Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
I think its fine for the individuals involved.
They will need to wear the cost, of any, reputation it might bring. Once people know, and talk about it, and it happens all the time, then the rep might be called into question. |

I agree - but does the reputation include how others see it being reflected upon them as close friend/family?

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
I don't think a persons sex life would affect how a family member might be perceived by other people.
I would be more concerned for the welfare of the person having casual sex than the person who worries about how it might make them look. |

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
Infinitely better and far less destructive than serial monogamy. Which tends to hurt plenty of people around those involved at break up stage. Very strong views personally on this.
Hence I'll put my hand up and say, I'd much prefer my daughters to carry on like this until they were absolutely and definitely certain of a partner. |

Should be the same, but society generally labels the man "jack the lad" or "ladies man" depending on his class, and the woman a slapper, irrespective of class.
With age and experience (ha!) I would say that do your thing but be reasonably discreet. It's still a fact that women are more likely to be judged so be careful but it takes 2 etc. I personally would be more miffed that my daughters would be making themselves ill with over indulgence if it all involved excess across the board...etc. With age and experience (ha!) when you meet that partner of your dreams all previous fade to nothing...and that the old fashioned advice sort of rings true...but that's easy for me to say! |

The reality is that attractive people meet attractive people and occasionally sparks fly. With age and experience (ha!) I would say that do your thing but be reasonably discreet. I'm not a great believer in the true love partner of your dreams stuff, sorry...
And that sometimes its worth telling your daughter or sons that pure excess (across the board) does not bring happiness.... |

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
I think coming from a very small (minded) community what a close friend/family member does seems to reflect on others.
When one person in our town slept with a few men (married men) then her sister was also classed as 'a bit easy with the loving' - just because one woman liked to behave that way - others presumed the sibling was the same. I am not saying I agree with this but I acknowledge that it is what happens. And yes concern for safety was one of my main concerns. Not just safety as in protection but in personal safety and also if the decison was made under the influence of alcohol. |

Conversely it's also why some of the best and surprisingly successful marriages are those to people that others regarded as "the Town bike" etc etc. The otherside of the coin being the most destructive break up's being those involving "Childhood sweethearts" |

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
No harm in it as long as all aspects of safety are ensured............ie someone knows of whereabouts, condoms etc
Also that the behaviour is not covering an unmet need or emotional problem. Have fun whilst you are young.....:o ...and yes girls will always get a bad name doing this and guys a 'stud' status......unfair I reckon. but having said all that and knowing what I was like :o ...ask me again when my kids are sexually active :o:unsure::):) Jan |

If they are consenting adults using safe sex, what moral business is it of ours?
Perhaps the question is more of prude/jealousy than or moral high ground? I certaintly did not mind during the ages of 18 to 28:sneaky: Plenty of nice memories;) |

Re: Are my views 'out dated'?
Here's a good YouTube link - a Country & Western song by a young Loretta Lynn on the subject of fooling around in a "mighty small town". The song starts at about 1.04: skip to there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChLtmalR_Dw
As she sings, about her fiance, "He's loved every woman in Jackson; ah, but Jackson ain't a very big place." Keeps it all in perspective! |

Its just extremely funny how the wives suddenly don't appreciate the husbands doing pick up or drop off's. Yes of course I have suggested my daughter has a play date |
