My Vent

I love this country so much and couldn't imagine living anywhere else in the world, but I still get really angered by some things in Australian society.

I always see posts on here from people talking about how crap Aus TV and mostly, they are right, but I don't really care that much for TV for it to affect me that much. Except when it comes to sport broadcasting.

For me, Channel 7 are the biggest bunch of unscrupulous w@nkers there are on TV when it comes to how they treat their sports viewers. The Aus Open tennis is only the latest thing to piss me off about them. They have been doing this for years, whereby they go to an ad and return at 30-0 in a game, missing two points. I would say this happens on average 2 or 3 times throughout the course of a day. What's more important here? The game or the ads?
Then if you are unlucky enough to live in QLD they show the evening games with an hour's delay so that they can ensure the Aussie public get their much needed doses of TodayTonight and Home & Away!!!!!! FFS!!!!!!! At least Channel 9 delay the 6 o'clock news for 5 mins until the cricket is over.

The 2008 Olympics had to have been the worst of the lot though. Again, Channel 7 the culprits, showing the third F#$%ing repeat of Grant Hackett's HEAT swim instead of showing the final of another event that no Aussie was taking part in! They even showed medal ceremony repeats for an Aussie that won bronze instead of another final that was live at the time. It almost seems deliberate in a way as they could easily run a simulcast of the other events (or tennis matches) on their alternative 7 digital channel (but that would get in the way of a "Brand New Series" of Hogan's Heros!)

On the other hand, the day they don't show *any* sport will not be a day too soon so far as I'm concerned <g>.

Hey! I've just found a button on my remote: according to the manual (p194) it's the "off" button....... Problem solved.

Re: My Vent

sports coverage is awful. ad placement is just thoughtless. News is biased and misses out all of the key little details that makes the news informative and enjoyable.

I also love it here though and when my OH is away, which is most of the time, I dont turn the tv on

You'll find that it's not the game or the ads that they are concerned with, but the advertising income that they charge. Events like that attract higher premium $$$$$ rates that the late night movie....;)

Like everywhere the national news is far better than the regional...it is excellent.

I have no issues with Australian TV per se. Find it shows exactly the same crap that the UK does. Do not get the UK TV is superior bit at all. Only watch sports coverage on Pay TV though, the commentary isn't quite so anal.

I could not survive with Australian normal channels. If I did not have Foxtel I would probably not bother ever switching on my TV.

Hey Broad

Glad you posted this. I was watching Murray and Nadal in the bedroom the other night and then came downstairs to watch the end of it on my pc and low and behold it was over. Then it dawned on me there was an hour delay.

Tune into ABC or SBS and watch these problems disappear.

That's what I do. Don't often watch TV but when I do it's either of these, can't tolerate any of the other channels. Oh, and I'm in love with Tony Jones :lol:

I know that the adverts are annoying but without these there would be no TV at all - they pretty much pay for the network.

yeah, I agree, but not at the expense of the show you are watching, surely? I am used to the ads every 5 mins these days, but what really sh!ts me is when they come back to the match midway through a game

The sports coverage is appalling from the scheduling through the stupid adverts for upcoming shite, cross-promotions (betting anyone?), inane KFC adverts and continuing to the commentary.

Talking of KFC ("Can't Eat That Shite"), since when did "Win A Years Supply Of KFC" have any place near a sporting event? And that grinning tosser in the advert ... <and breath>

I do like listening to the cricket on ABC radio though.

Re: My Vent

Why the bloody hell, when they now have a number of digital channels, do they drop regular programs to put on hours on mind numbingly boring tennis....

Apart from monitoring the size of the Williams girls breasts its like watching paint dry.....
