Tricks of the Marketing trade #63, 64 and 65.

Raise your price and then offer a discount, BOGOF, 3 for 2 etc.

Advertise a huge discount then in the small print at the bottom it says that this is 25% off the price charged on Tuesday 22nd Nov in our Milton Keynes store (where they had 1 for sale on that single day). Complies with the law and looks very generous when it isn't.

3 for 2 - you have to pay for the highest and second highest priced goods, the cheapest product is the free one, just in case you pick differently priced goods.

Trick #84 as used in computers and other technical products:

Charge an extremely high price to begin with, get all the nerdies and must have's to pay the ridiculous prices then as the sales start to dry up you lower your prices in small instalments until it reaches a level where you are still doing pretty nicely (skimming the cream off the top of the market).

- She is amazed by offers in the supermarkets like buy one get one free, or buy 3 for the price of 2. Nothing like that in Oz.

Definately nothing like that in Oz......supermarkets here remind me of the very first Supermarkets in the UK.........once known as 'Lyptons' anyone remember them????

- She is surprised that we have Pizza Hut restaurants. In Australia there is no such thing as a pizza restaurant - just take away and delivery. Oh, and the delivery charge for a pizza is $5, not free like in the UK.
- She is amazed at the way people park in the UK. Apparently in Oz you would get ticketted if you parked the way people do here.
- She is amazed by offers in the supermarkets like buy one get one free, or buy 3 for the price of 2. Nothing like that in Oz.
- We have to pay for a TV licence????
- Can't believe how early it gets dark in winter.
- Why doesn't the fish and chip shop sell burgers?
- You can't get a good burger in the UK. Burgers in Oz have beetroot in them.
- impressed by the fact that I get free cold drinks at my work. At her work the company provides tea and coffee but you have to bring your own mug.
- impressed that my wife, who is on maternity leave, it still treated as an employee and still gets holiday pay, health insurance etc. Apparently in Oz women on maternity leave get nothing.
- and finally, and the most important one, doesn't reckon the judges should have a say on who gets voted off on X factor.

I've been in Pizza Hut in Oz. it was in Grafton, where the choice was between the Chinese (closed on Monday when we were there), the Chippy (closed on Monday when we were there) and Pizza Hut. The guy almost had a heart attack in Pizza Hut when we said no to the 'all you can eat buffet' - I think that was all people ever ordered. Mind you, having picked our own and had drinks the total bill was a whole £11 - no wonder they are an endangered species. P.S. Never go to Grafton!!!

Yes, a few years working in marketing and I realised it is all one big flipping con, though my Mother is not convinced, I keep trying to tell her but she thinks she is getting bargains
