As we all know, it's nigh impossible to buy *anything* that isn't wholly or mainly made in the place. And the quality is so often cr*p. Trousers that need hips like pencils, shirts with arms too small to get through, power tools that have inaccurate adjustments, devices with tiny screws that strip - the list goes on. So you have to buy a replacement, which is made in ...... We in the West are being set up, aided by willing mugs like Dear Leader, who can't see a thing wrong with anyone who speaks Mandarin or Cantonese. Just wait until China revalues by 100% and we *still* have to buy our knickers from them because the West's manufacturing is just a memory. You ain't seen nuffink yet! What a weird post  Alot of American and European companies get their products made in China or India or Malaysia or Korea for the cheaper costs, but they still have their Quality Assurance people checking over it. Things like the iPhone, or indeed any apple product is made in china and is extremely high quality. Nearly every LCD screen, (like the one you're looking at now) is made by Samsung in Korea. The computer you are using is built with a motherboard built in China. So your main whinge is the hips on your trousers don't fit? JTL |

JTL (For that matter, what on earth makes you include Korea in your reply? It's nothing to do with China and wasn't even referred to in my post!) My point was to do with the FACT that a worrying majority of goods to be bought everywhere in the West are made in China and that - not only in *my* opinion - the quality is lacking in comparison with what was previously available. As you say, some global companies do have quality controls that ensure decent outputs, but there are many things coming out of the place that are very cheaply made - and show it. If that hasn't been your experience I would love to have a shopping list from you so that I can buy the same things! |

They do make quality products - when QC is determined by another country. Left to their own devices it is just shoddy crap.
I have just come in from replacing the CF bulb in one of my gate lights: expensive "Marine quality" s/steel units which are rusting away after two years. The "globe" was full of water because of no seal, and tripping the cb. Just one of a constant series of problems that one endures. (And no, it's not life threatening!) BTW, the units are made (in China) by an Australian company, whose website says they are committed to quality.... |

So do you blame China or the Quality control of the Australian company getting their products made dirt cheap in China?
Obviously if made on behalf of an extranational company that company should ensure it's getting a quality product. But often, they don't look too closely if the cost is low. Many things are made by Chinese companies to their own standards and exported to whoever will buy them, and it reminds me of the old story of the astronaut (John Glen?) who was asked what he thought about during the hours before launch. "About the fact that I was sitting on top of hundreds of tons of liquid oxygen and propellant and several million components - each of which was made by the company tendering the lowest cost". Millions of Chinese components are made in sweatshop backstreet shacks and assembled in factories and IMO it's not surprising that quality suffers. My windows (revisiting an old thread) cost around $55k, were made in China in a brand new, up to date factory - and were a disaster both with the frames and the glass. (Long story) The fact that they had all modern equipment, computer fabrication etc didn't stop them leaking, the glass being soft and rippled, the locks breaking and so on. The *people* just don't have the knowledge yet about what we expect. |

The *people* just don't have the knowledge yet about what we expect. Apple for example, get their iPhones and iMacs made in China. They got really bad press when it was discovered that the workers lived in huts next to the factory with very poor conditions. So they ordered their suppliers to rectify that. Thats what I mean about Quality Control, if you are your chinese suppliers major customer, you can tell them to get it right or you'll leave for someone else. It works, and I'm sure other quality companies who have their products manufactured in China have a similar idea. Sure, pay them less than US workers, but don't mess your workers about and treat them like crap or they won't be commited to the quality of the final product. It always comes down to this: You get what you pay for. Ironically, I've read about how NASA now get ripped off by every company because they go for the most expensive everything. So a square metre of insulating tiles that should cost $500 cost NASA $50,000. So it actually comes down to this: You get what you pay for, unless you're NASA.:p JTL |
