The BE Most Selfish Visitor - 2008

I have recently had someone invite themselves over for a month - now I know how it will turn out, I know their selfish ways and I know that it will cause rows - I just know.

In fact it will be worse than I imagine it to be because I know the person very well. Which is why I said 'Oh you can stay over the weekend but it will be best if you rent an apartment, probably cheaper for you and you will have the freedom to come and go as you please'. This didn't go down too well as they were 'hoping to save money and bring a bit of spending money'.

After reading some truly shocking stories on this site with regards to visitors, some funny, some unbelievable and some quite sad, I reckon we should have a contest for the most selfish visitor from the UK to Australia.

Things like:

Did they invite themselves and you have no choice?

Did they contribute financially and with the housework?

How did they treat you/your family?

Did they cause loads of rows between you and your partner?

We can see who has had the worst/funniest visitor and give each other tips on how to cope.

Because if this person turns up on my doorstep then I really will poke out my own eyes with a teaspoon.

So who has had the most selfish visitor, who has had the most unbelievable or shocking behaviour?

How have you dealt with it?

We should have a poll at the end and could present the selfish gits with a BE trophy to see if they take the hint.

LOL I could probably answer some of them questions and im not even out there yet.

MIL used to cause sooo many problems when she came to stay with us in the U.K from Ireland for a week god only knows what its going to be like for a month. Maybe sunstroke will see her in bed for a week or so. :sneaky:

One of our visitors (a family member) was sooo lazy he sat and ate his cornflakes dry because he couldn't be arsed to reach behind him and get the milk - claimed he didn't 'like' to - didn't like to - he didn't mind flying to see us in oz and mind our hospitality for a month and we took them on holiday. His laziness caused a proper punch up between him and my OH. It has taken them 5 years to be able to speak again.

Maybe it’s Irish mothers coz mine drives me mental when she and dad come over from Ireland to London!

Mine re-arranges my kitchen to where everything ‘should be’, gets up at 5.30am and makes tea doing her comedy quiet thing (i.e. waking up everyone) then blethers at me for an hour while I’m trying to get ready for work, starts whinging about my sisters just as I’m leaving the house and so I miss my train. Then they get home from whatever they do (something worth coming to London for like going for a walk) before I do and takes up where she left off at 8am. She won’t do anything unless I take the day off, they leave newspapers everywhere, there’s always marmalade on my kitchen counter and crumbs on the floor (and she’s a neat FREAK at home!!) and my dad leaves the knives face up in the drainer so I’ve cut myself twice.

And they’re coming over in two weeks for another whole week!! AGH!! I literally dread to think of them coming to see me in Oz, ma reckons they’ll come over for six months over the Irish winter. *drops dead*

I wouldnt know where to start.... a small example of what I have to put up with.... Feeding my 6 month old a chubba chub lolly, and not understanding why it is a choking hazard, or why it is bad for her, when she doesnt have any teeth:huh:, smoking in my non smoking house, no matter how many times I ask her not to, then leaving matches in my childrens bedroom , then there is this wonderfu habit she has of taking her chewing gum out and leaving it on the dining table when we are eating *bleugh* oh I could go on, I really could.

My lil sister is my other visitor from hell, typical smelly teen, who lies on the sofa under her spongebob squarepants duvet and argues with the 2 year old about whether to watch Dora the Explorer or MTV...

Fun times ahead for me I just know it....at least our house will be bigger this time round.

Haha! That’s exactly what my mother does! She’ll leave the newspapers everywhere yet go get a bottle of Milton fluid and clean all my cups. Nothing like implying my house is manky (which is isn’t!!). If I did that at home she’d be SO offended, I’d never hear the end of it.

Plus her handbag seems to be everywhere, no matter where I go in the flat, I’m falling over it! I’ve mentioned on another similar thread that the only solution for me is to get in a few totally mangy cats when they plan to come to Oz, mam can’t bear cats so she’ll go stay with my brother! Haha! (plus I had an offer from a fellow BE-er to supply said cats!):eek:

And why is it all those people that hardly give you the time of day, all of a sudden start saying 'oh we know where to come for a holiday' we got old school friends, playground associates, neighbours, and almost complete strangers already inviting themselves out, and we haven't even got our Visa yet.

All I can say is that my Mother will be welcome, if she stops holding her hand out exclaiming what a poor pensioner she is, but her friend wont be, otherwise the OH will be done for murder!!! if she wants to stay more than say 2/3 weeks then the local caravan park will probably do some great deals. If my Brother and his wife want to come with their fickle, rude children then I shall move!:p and leave no forwarding address.

If I wanted to run a guesthouse then I would be buying one!!!;)

Cor hark at me. I thought people missed family and friends!!!!

Can't help yet with real visitors but the thought of it scares me more than moving to the other side of the world.

OMG. I've just realised what I've done. We are going for our reccie to OZ in 3 weeks leaving our 4 kids, 2 cats and dog at home. The logistics of trying to farm them out for 12 days finally got the better of me and I offered to fly my parents down to stay. Great solution, except that my Mum will be using my kitchen so I'll now have to clean out the fridge, oven, pantry, cupboards. I'll also have to go through the kids drawers and wardrobes and throw out anything remotely worn. Dave is frantically trying to leave nothing unmended in case my Dad tries to fix it.
Was this a good idea? Much as I love them the two days they are staying after our return will be enough for all of us.

Smoking in your house when you have asked her not to is the lowest of the low and the most selfish act ever.

I suggest you eat Savoy cabbage, peas, sprouts, mushrooms mixed with the spiciest curry in the world, drink some lager, shut all the windows and fart your way to make her die.

Bloody selfish.

As for feeding your child something like that, where have her brains gone?

We had a family member come to stay, they flew out first class stayed in a top hotel in Sydney for a few days, then with us. They have two huge houses in Uk, where we lived being half way between the two - they came to visit us twice in 9years of us living at our house (and one of those times was to say goodbye when we moved here), yet all of a sudden they can come to stay with us?

They have loads of foreign holidays each year, children at boarding school, fancy cars YET did not pay for a single thing whilst staying with us. As if we wanted to pay for all the sightseeing, car parks, meals etc... Once we even caught a bus into Sydney and they only got out their bus fare to pay, they did not even volunteer to pay for all of us!

I was so mad by the end of the visit, because it was not just the lack of offers to pay for things but neither once did they help cook a meal, load the dishwasher etc.....

ARRGH!!!
