The Revival Church here in Geelong is in a similar vein. Attracts a lot of press and I find it fascinating........no celebration of Easter, Christmas or birthdays allowed because nowhere in the bible does it say you should.

What I tell my children is, every religion believes that they know the truth but unfortunately just because you really really think it's true doesn't mean it actually is. I have no problem with religious people just please don't shove it at me, I don't go around preaching my beliefs but others feel they must convert everybody, I was always told at home not to discuss religion or politics .

My son's teacher annoyed me, my son decided to opt out of RE classes at school, now as a family we always tell the children it's up to them what they believe in and don't push them either way, they are free to choose. He did RE for a few years, got nothing out of it and decided it wasn't for him.

My son's teacher when getting my note asking for my son to be excused from religion asked my son " Why, don't your parents believe in God?"

Honestly what does t have to do with her what we believe in!!! He goes to state primary school...My son was so cute he said, " I don't know but I know they believe in Santa".......:p

All I know is I work with lots of people who have embraced these new religions and oh my what a bunch of hypocrites they are.... smile at each other while trying to stab each other in the back..

If nobody discussed religion or politics then we'd end up in a situation where decisions supposedly for the good of the people (invading a middle-eastern country, say) were being motivated by religious beliefs.

And we wouldn't want that to happen ...

I like your son, btw :D

Religious Studies nowadays should be about teaching kids about different religions, what their followers believe, how they live, what observations and requirements are, dietry stuff...

I believe Everyone should have a good understanding of the major religions.... because we need to understand where people are "coming from".... People we work with, people we meet, people we care for as a nurse....

but it should be general knowledge, not teaching some one to become.... a Bhudist, Muslim, Jew, Christian whatever.... Not "celebrating" their religious festivals/events...

thats just IMHO

Many people with no religion behave with far more grace and human kindness than many with a religion. Just saying....

I had nine years of Catholic school. It taught me to get drunk and not use a condom.

Just so.

And, why are all the religions, I can think of, run by men?

I come from a Anglican church family and the truth is, I was churched out by 14 and have never stepped back inside one on a regular basis since. I can't take it seriously. I quite like some of the pageantry - which is why US religions suck - it's all a bit fake tits to the Anglican all real woman. Having said that, the notion of Anglican being a nationalised Christianity amuses me.

I don't knock religion, but some of them are whacko.
Most people who are religious seem to have conviction, I give them that.

Is that necessarily something to be praised? Conviction can be blind, or at best short-sighted.

The world would be better if more people has more open minds, did a bit of independent thinking and had the courage to change their minds.

I was going to add to MP's post and say that there are stacks of non-religious people who are decent, but also that most religious people are decent : I find that alot of non-religious people point a lot of doubt at religion, yet most religious people get on with it. The 'Ivan Gelical' style is easy pickings.

So each to their own. I have a very religious Islamic bloke at work who bows and genuflects in the corner...he's a little bit crazy...but a nice bloke...you can't help but like him.

a lovely colleague of mine was a 7th day adventist- the website said that's why she was lovely and happy etc. I thought it was her personality.

She sadly died leaving a family behind- kids were around 10. At her funeral I found it very disturbing to hear that her body would just lay in the ground until Judgement Day when everyone dies and they are all reunited. Where is the comfort for a small child to think his mother is just laying in a cold grave all alone? I thought religion was there to provide comfort?

Religion does give some people comfort... Me for one.... And gives people a moral code to live by....

However its an excellent vehilcle for passing on messages of hell fire and damnation, guilt tripping, exploitation and superiority complexes... And persecuting others..... As demonstarted by the entire history of the world.. I can totally un derstand why some people are actively anti any religion....

That's about as much comfort as my MIL received from her (Church of England) 'bereavement group' after my husband died. She was told she should feel blessed that God chose to take him.

Quite.

I know a lot of decent people. Some are religious, some aren't. Some believe in something but they're not quite sure what. I don't think religious status is any indication of decency, one way or the other.

I even know a Mormon. She's a good woman. Some of her beliefs are.., I think, odd. But she's still a good woman and its not for me to judge.

I have to say the older I get the more anti- religious I become.
I don't have a problem with anyone believing what they want, but I do get annoyed by folk who try to tell me I am wrong.

As far as I can see religion causes lots of problems in the world so it definitely is not for me.
