Default Mobile phone scam

Right, I'm always the first to laugh at people who forward on fake warnings of "this email can rot your teeth" and "new virus can destroy your LCD"etc.

BUT!! We have been getting one ring calls on our mobiles for the last few weeks. Its always from a Sydney number, and the obvious hope is that we will call back.

Don't!!

We got a warning about it in work today, Telstra and Optus confirmed it, and its a well known scam. I don't know if its been mentioned on here before. Anyway, the details are here

Apparently the company doing the spam/scam say its not a scam, but errr, paying $40 to call them back to be told I may have won a prize seems a bit off to me.

Anyway the number that keeps calling us begins with 028, some of the other numbers they use begin with 03. The easiest trick to use is to google the number, if its a scam you'll get taken here

They update the list of numbers the scammers are using everyday.

Funny you should say that! Hubby got a missed call last weekend and the number started with 02! Told him not to call back and to let whoever it was call him back. God job! Mind you it's a work's mobile, but I don't think his boss would be too happy!

Yep, I'm with Telstra and I've had the calls too. Phone only rings once, enough to register the number. I never call back if I don't recognise the number, so until know I'd forgotten about it.

if it's one of those "02xxxxx called today at XX:XX but did not leave a message" then no.... they're sent by your phone company and are free!

Totally off topic (and thanks to the OP for the info) but i thought of a fantastic scam a while ago....

Get a sticker on the back of your car that reads - if this car is being driven dangerously then please phone 0898 xxx xxxx - you set yourself up with a 0898 number then go and drive like a twat for a few weeks

Funny though - 09 numbers don't quite sound the same.
