Mobile phone plans for light users
Hi, I was considering sticking a sim card in the phone my son brought from the UK so he could recieve my calls and texts from the UK.
Any ideas as to which would be the best way to do it? I don't wanna get one of these vodafone plans that have to be used up in a month of so cos he just won't use that much. Many thanks in advance Jazzys |

We all have a virgin one here as all texts between us are free and we rarely use the phones to make calls.
Costs $15 to top up and lasts 180 days i think. Texts are 35c to the uk and calls are 35c per 30 sec's. |

Is the phone unlocked? I have a couple of sim cards, unwanted and unused that you can have one of. One's Virgin and one's Optus Boost. The Virgin top ups last about 180 days i think, not sure about the Boost one. We each have a phone and only use Pre Pay, it's just not worth it for us to go on a plan.
How do i go about getting it unlocked? We brought it from the UK I've just found out today that you can't send picture messages or any MMS messages from Oz to the UK. When is this country gunna catch up with the rest of the planet? Jazzys |

You can if you organise it with your provider. I couldn't send pics from the UK to Aus when I was there. If you are just buying a sim card or even a prepaid phone package you do not need your driving licence. You only need that if you are going the post paid way and they need proof for setting up the payment system. I've bought about five phones, all pre paid packages since being here and have never been asked for ID.
They also told me that as there was no agreement between australia and the UK it is not possible to send any type of MMS messages between the two countries. As for the SIM, I went to woolies to buy a vodafone one last week and she wouldn't sell me it unless i had my drivers licence to show first. Jazzys |

Sorry to have to disagree with you moneypen, but my experiences are different to yours. I called vodafone today and asked how I could check my emails on my phone, like i used to do in england (on the exact same phone). They told me I could not do it on a pre-pay plan it had to be contract in order to access web services.

Jazzys Only used Virgin here or Orange in the UK so can't comment on what is available or requested when buying from a different provider. |
