Re: Mixed race marriages and families
Possibly - I do know as a white British man, being a) relatively rich, b) from a nation which is accepted globally as being rich and highly respected and c) someone who has for his whole life been in a position of relative power (compared with many other races) that whenever I have ever been subjected to racial prejudice - very rare but it has happened - it can never be truly hurtful.
Contrast that with someone from a race which has been permanently seen as inferior to another then surely it's obvious why a 'racist' comment to a white person might be seen as irrelevant, 'fun' and harmless whilst the equivalent comment to someone else might be quite damaging....?

I guess it would be a pain if a door was nonetheless shut in your face in Arabia or in Indonesia and you couldn't get anything done.
I think many of us should try putting ourselves in other's shoes for the day or week. Then we would know.
There was a program on TV in the early 90s set in the UK where a white man and a black man were sent to conduct business with people, like apply as a lodger - secretly filmed. The black man was genuinely alarmed to have people tell him 'No' - only for the white man to come back minutes later and be told 'Yes'. I think he had hoped he would have a better experience.

Re: Mixed race marriages and families
i think that i might have started a discussion questioning racism as I am married to a Jamaican. In the UK we had a bit of racism, in Jamaica we had quite a lot, over here (melbourne) there is hardly any re skin colour - more towards where people are from. I find that the mothers at my sons school are just ignorant and rude and keep their little cliques of Italians/Greeks/East Europeans etc even though most of them have never even been to that country. Our attitude is pretty relaxed and just get on with it. We hang out with aussies and dont go out to be with poms - I havent looked on this forum for months. We are a part of the Carribean Society in Victoria but not very active. I managed a team of 10 that had 8 different nationalities in it. Its all very mutli-cultural. I played cricket in a league where I was the only Brit in the whole league let alone team and I got zero abuse (a little disappointing really!!!! ;-))
What I am trying to say is that I came here to not neccesarily build a Little Britain (for want of a better term) in Aus. Yes there is racism - its everywhere, but that is due to ignorance and lack of education. We have and hopefully always will just rise above it and get on with our lives and not worry about how thick and uneducated others are.

I know there is a similar thread re: racism in Oz but I am specifically interested in views from people living in Oz who have mixed race relationships or families and if they have experienced racism. My sister and I have different fathers (I am white she is black) and throughout our childhood in UK we experienced racist comments... would that happen in Oz today? My boyfriend is Asian - would we meet racism in Oz?
(hoping Mods will keep this separate please as its not about the American fella!!! )
