Another silly question, if the black battery dies, and they find the black box after the battery has stopped can they still retrieve the information they need from it, or will all the information die with the battery?
Should be non-volatile storage, solid state. As such it should be safe and secure, if they can get to it.

You can fire that type of device in a shell, from a tank, and hit a target, and still have it recoverable.

The boxes from Air France 447 (crashed in Atlantic in 2009) were not found until almost 2 years after the crash. They were able to retrieve the data.

Rumour has it that more definite information is at hand on the black box (eg they found it). Only a rumour, but the rumours also say that well known credit grabber abbott is due to give a press conference at 2pm - so we'll see.

Isn't he in China, busy selling the farm?

There's always time for ol' Tone to claim the credit for something he had nothing to do with. Let's be honest, there's no chance of him claiming credit for something he DID do....

I heard a news report at about 10am advising they had found the black box, however on the next news bulletin they appeared to have backtracked
I do hope they have found it, but the thought of Abbott bleating on.....as if he personally has been searching!

This is a continuing theme of MH370. The media inventing what they want to hear or the story they want to break. I think it's one of the reasons the Malaysians copped so much flak, they were often accused of backtracking on things they'd never actually said in the first place.

From what I can tell, ol' Tone wants to announce the aircraft found when he meets with chinese PM later today - but the military led search team doesn't want to get anywhere near saying that till they have eyes on target. Hence the cross briefings today.

I'll guess some paid liar is currently hard at work dreaming up some nice, woolly phrases that can be mistranslated, specifically for the press conference later.

Indeed.
I would rather criticise the media than the Malaysian govt.

Something that may be of interest. Here are the two boats involved in the search for signals. Click on the "show on map" icon for it's location and recent track.

Ocean Shield
Echo

And since this only gives the most recent tracks, here's what has been seen over previous days :

The region of interest is on an almost direct line between Colombo and Perth....
