Default Melways still the go in Melbourne?

I want to buy a road map book as a Christmas gift for a new driver.

Many years ago I discovered that whilst the UBD was the go in Brisbane, it was a Melways that was required in Melbourne.

Is this still the case?

Advice greatfully received.

Melways is the standard, and map references from it often quoted to help people find a place. UBD is the poor man's substitute!

For very near the same price you could buy a GPS unit

Yep, a GPS is now the standard, everywhere.

A GPS that nags you if you go over the speed limit and tells you where the cameras are is the ideal gift for the new driver.

Forget the dead tree merchants.

On the freeway to Surfers Paradise, the mobile flashing warning sign"IGNORE GPS Directions!" near a roadworks site.
For serious/commercial drivers Melway/Sydway/Brisway is compulsorary, even with GPS unit.
