Mass exodus of tradies fro uk

I was working up in Maroochydore on the sunshine coast tday and met a cockney up there who told me that there are thousands of tradies looking to come to Aus as they are losing out to skilled tradesmen going to uk from europe. Just wondered how much truth is in this and how many of you are making the move for this reaso

Im a spark in the lake district and yes there all moving there way in up here. Heard of a guy that went on holiday for a month worked for the same company for 20 years as a builder, came back to find his boss had taken a load of pol's on and told him he would have to drop his wage:ohmy: . You hear many storys and i think long term it will have a knock on effect but that isnt the reason we are going

I work in and around the outskirts of London and yes there are loads of Eastern Europeans coming in but most of them are not tradesmen but they do work hard.
The jobs in London are really rough and I would rather not work on them anymore, you cant understand anybody and its a pain. I have some friends living in Southampton and there are now around 30,000 Poles living there..!!!
I have just been asked to take over a job in Bristol because the Albanians they have got doing the work are a load of rubbish.

Dont know if it will cause a mass exodus but my bIL lost out some work recently as he was heavily undercut by polish workers, and this is for a guy he'd worked for for a few years. Didnt work out fortunately as their workmanship was dreadful.

Also saw a leaflet advertising cheap 'polish tradesman', for all trades! So there are now agencies setting themselves up off the back of this. Makes a mockery of the minimum wage too.

We are in Manchester BTW. Still overall seems to be plenty of work..for now.

One of the aussie daily moan shows, (current affairs shows on around 6 pm equivalent to UK's daily mail) did a UK tradesmen taking our jobs report.

Appears to have had similar effect on the sites as the daily mail screaming Poles working for a penny.

Greeks and Italians have been an integral part of the Australian social fabric since the 40s. Somehow I doubt that there's been a sudden rise in the number of Greek & Italian immigrants.

It's entirely possible (and far more likely) that they're coming from Melbourne.

I wondered where they had gone ;)

Most people I know of that post from South London, are very happy with Polish Migrants. Bear in mind though, that a great percentage of the london workforce are white collar workers, on good wages, that like to have people do things for them around the house and garden and other service industries. They are probably the ones that benefit most from East European migrants.

With the labour shortage in Aussie now, there is bound to be a insatiable demand for cheap labour, which will be filled by oseas migrants on temp visas I would think. I cannot recall such a shortage of labour in all my 26 years in this country.

Yes, my hubby in the construction industry working on new builds doing roads, sewers, excavation , groundworks etc, he has been looking at the possibility to coming out there.

Would you recommend it to a UK citizen, Is there plenty work out there for the construction industry. He job is listed on the skills in demand list the MODL etc. Whats the salary like compared to the uk , do you have any idea? Also which areas would you recommend?

We have two children age 8 & 4, so would like somewhere for families.

Thanks

Hi, Its probably best to do a search on previous threads about some of the questions you have asked. The wages whilst being important are only relative to the cost of living where you are actually living. The wages seem to be a little bit less especially when starting at the bottom of the ladder again but the cost of living seems a little bit cheaper depending on where you live.
As for where you want to live each person in each major city will probably recommend their own city. You should think about what climate you want and the cost of housing. The schools seem pretty good where ever, but the housing costs and climate are the ones to think about.
You get all of the seasons in Melbourne but more constant heat in Queensland.
A good search of the threads on this site will probably answer everything you can think of and more.
Good luck, Mick
