It looks like a funnel web, although the web says that it could be a mouse spider or a trapdoor spider. Apparantly funnel webs aren't so common in SA.

From searching though, it's web looked like a funnel web's and all the mouse and trapdoor spiders I've seen look nothing like it - however the funnel web does.

So i'm about 90% sure it's a funnel web spider

Bit brown for a funnel web... they're usually black, or have darker 'armour plating' on them....

Given that funnel webs can bite through your fingernails, make sure the gloves are thick.

PS - when you poke it, does it rear up and drip venom at you?

Shame you killed it. The females usually stay in their burrow, but it's the males which roam... hunting.
But if you kill one, a new one will move in and take over the territory. It's sometimes better to know that you have one and where it is, than wonder where they are....

Looks like a mouse spider. Think they're on the poisonous list as well!

Cheers

Mouse spiders won't kill you ... very painful bite though.
