I'm amazed the original Oyster was not a travel card - all modes of transport when it came out.

I was under the impression that Oyster had been doing all that for 10 years.

Melbourne's My ki is now (sort of) working but they could have used Oyster!

Just be thankful - we're still buying paper tickets here in Sydney, though there is the VERY slow phased roll out of the Opal card. I think it covers 12 stations now!

Must admit I'm sure I remember getting my oyster card for my trip back back in April 2010 and it would have been all modes - I;d have got it for tube/overground use, wouldn't have got one just for buses, but maybe my memory is playing tricks! I never paid much attention to its original launch as I wouldn't have been travelling round London then as much then.
Whatever its history though, I love it now!!

As I recall the Oyster card was phased in. I worked three days a week when the Oyster card was introduced and to start with only monthly or annual passes were available on Oyster, so I couldn't take advantage of it until 2004 when PAYG was introduced. I mainly used the tube at the time, so I'm not sure when the overground was added, but I know that I have used the overground on trips back in 2008 and 2010.

I remember it existing back in 2003 - I think.
But then I also remember buying travel cards that year.

Actually, after all the beatup of Melbourne's MyKi - it does now seem to work!
They introduced faster gates at mainline stations...

and for most people touching off in Zone 2 (ie. commuters) they don't need to touch off so there's no effort there either.

Had the time of our lives in London (btw 20 quid in the Oyster card was enough for 6 days ays and believe me we got around) . It was cheaper to buy my daughter a child daily ticket, so bought them in advance. They were 3.50, you can get child Oyster cards, but seems to be a hassle! My daughter (and us) had a great time at the Harry potter exhibition ). Highlight for me was I got asked out for dinner by some nutter in a pub , pmsl, you've gotta take this as a compliment at my age!!
Seriously, the sites of London were amazing, 6 days Definately not long enough !!!

The Oyster card has been usable on trains, tubes & buses for yonks. I only left London in 2011 and was using my Oyster to communte from Bromley to Hammersmith for at least 6 years before then. It wasn't available on ALL networks (methinks South Western were the one network holding out) but definitely all tubes and buses, depending of course on what travel card you had added to it.
