A 2-stroke engine is simpler and cheaper than a 4-stroke
2-stroke will not last as long as a 4-stroke
With a 2-stroke, the oil has to be mixed with the petrol before it can be used, 4-stroke has separate oil and petrol tanks
2-stroke has more power than the same sized 4-stroke
2-stroke is not as fuel efficient as a 4-stroke
2-stroke is more polluting (if that kind of thing worries you)

I could hire something mechanical to do the digging but where is the back-breaking fun in that?

Being time-rich and money poor it makes sense to put my body on the line, what is left of it ...
leave it till the next fathers day and i will send pauline round to dig the hole lol

trust me with this thing there is no effort in my part

Advice on brands?

We've had a cheapo Rover from Bunnings, lasted 3 years, are their more expensive mowers any better?

Thinking Victa, maybe Masport (seem to be 2 stroke though).

Originally wanted a Honda (used by the council, always a good sign) but they seem to start at $800. Ouch.

Only to be used for around the house yards (1/2 acre?), the horses can deal with the rest.

Advice appreciated
If you win the lottery, buy a honda. If not, go for a victa. I bought a 4 stroke mulch/catch one 3 years ago and can't kill the thing no matter how much I try. Our front grass patch is on a fairly steep slope and it doesn't have any problems (up or down).

Cheers

Cool, thanks, I got myself a Victa Tornado so we'll see how it goes.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, that's my excuse anyway ...

Probably a silly question but where would one buy a Victa lawnmower? We live in Brisbane (Toowong/Indooroopilly area) and we don't even have a Bunnings in our area. I don't mind driving to find a good one.

We got our from our local Mitre 10. About 25% cheaper than the Victa 'authorised dealer'.

Cheers

There's a Bunnings at Oxley.

Okay, I've just done the first mow with the new beast ... the verdict is overwhelmingly positive.

It ripped through previously tentative mowing ground (bear in mind I haven't mowed for months ...) and started on the first pull from new.

Seems pretty good on fuel too.

$500 well spent

Well, I bought a $300 Rover and a couple of second-hand $100 specials in the 6 years we've been here and I think this one will last a bit longer than the others.

Oh, I get it, 'cut above average'
