Only if you aren't bothered about an international warranty, as I couldn't find anyone that would provide one.

How cheap is cheap?

I haven't found the price comparisons for laptops in the UK's favour anyway, even at this exchange rate.

Must admit I didn't compare prices - having just spent 7 days travelling across Europe without an internet connection, I just wanted one. The warranty issue was the showstopper for me (and by then I had access to one).

Places like PC World should have prices on their websites though.

I don't think they are much cheaper over there. You might make a small saving but not enough to make it worth the hassle.

Australia is competitive on computer prices.

That's the last place I would buy one in the UK; they are overpriced and have shite customer service.

PC World=Dick Smith=Harvey Norman

I wouldn't know, never bought anything from them, but would think their prices are much of a muchness so a handy resource. cnet is another one.

Laptops do seem to be one area where Oz doesn't try to rip you off. At random:

Samsung RV510 UK = £350 = A$560
Samsung RV510 AU = A$555 (although not exactly the same standard)

Therefore the UK is only useful if you can get the VAT back, and that's not necessarily easy....

Hi,

I know for a fact Apple will provide an international warranty. I had my UK laptop fixed when i was in Brisbane a few months ago. But they are not cheap.

Macs do have international warranty, but if you buy expended warranties on your mac, check it's international. We got some mac laptops in UAE and bought extended warranty from Virgin, turned out it was only valid in the UAE so got a refund. Had replacement parts put in macs in Dubai that were purchased here in Aus without problem though.

Looks like you got sorted out, but for other looking, I have found that www.laptopsdirect.co.uk is a good price to start for a comparison.

I bought from the states a year back, got a much much better deal on an ASUS.. came in at under $1000 with shipping for same model laptop I could only find online here in Aus around the $1500 mark, plus i got 4gb ram rather than 3gb here, plus 500g hard disk compared to bog standard 320g here. Tbh i couldn't believe the price difference and bought with some trepidation. It was fine, better than fine.
Has a 2 year global warranty in the country you're in.

Yes, my GF did the same - Bought a huge great desktop replacement laptop at Staples in the US - It cost her US$795 + sales tax, and was nearly AU$3k here. We still see it more expensive here, and that was nearly 2 years ago now.

I also picked up an HP Netbook at the same time for US$ 259 + sales tax, RRP in Australia was $795 at the time.

The US can't really be beaten on stuff like that.
