Re: Lap Band Surgery
That's very kind of you Jo, thankyou
You can only get funding for a lap band if you have a bmi greater than 35. Patients can still have the op privately (same surgeons, same lists, same hospital, just a private ward) if their bmi is less. Some of these patients, in my opinion, aren't THAT big, but, they have been advised the pros & cons & sign the consent. Private patients are the surgeon's bread & butter - the world over......
Weight loss is a sensitive issue & people get very defensive, I understand that.
I have worked in this area for ten years & was just sharing my experience & opinions. I meant no offence to anybody.
As I said, I'm out of here for fear of upsetting anyone else.
And I really do wish you all the best of luck

I know what you are trying to say and as I said a lot of it was the way I took it, you didn't upset me just made me a little mad temporarily. If you genuinely have useful information please contribute it, that is what this thread was about but don't assume things about people please. I am sure some patients in your hospital don't need to go through it. I know for a fact that even privately my surgeon won't touch under BMI 35 people unless they have serious medical issues that go with it.
So that's all over then? Hope so.... it's rare that someone really should withdraw from a thread - providing no-one goes too wildly off topic, surely all opinions are valid.

Just a quick update, all went well. I am now banded also had hernia repair done at the same time. I feel like I have been through 5 rounds with Mike Tyson but that is normal, just aching all over now. Otherwise I feel fine within myself.
Will keep you updated after a good nights sleep.

Re: Lap Band Surgery
As Dorothy said you will need to get referred by a GP. You will also need to check the Medibank that you are covered for this op also sometimes you have to wait 12 months before you can claim.
I am having the Op done in Perth on Friday and am covered by Medibank, here are my cost so far:
$160 for the initial referral consultation (you can claim back some from Medicare)
$180 for Scans (you can claim back some from Medicare)
Bulk billed for blood tests
$1000 Pre Admission and Facilitation fee (non returnable or claimable)
$200 excess for Anaesthetist (non claimable)
$200 Medibank excess (non claimable)
$75 Dietician
Hope this helps

Re: Lap Band Surgery
I havent read this thread all the way through but have a few questions to ask those who had the lap band done.
I asked the dr if i could have a lap band done and i was told i was in the wrong catergory(sp) and would not refer me. All he said was the lap band was for those people who cant control what they eat, ie raid the fridge constantly. Which i dont.
I have a BMI of just under 35 and weigh 92.5 kg and im 5ft5.
Ive been on orlistat and did lose 4kg on it but the dr took me off saying it wasnt working. The weight has now gone back on and i feel miserable.
I have an underactive thryoid. I do exercise and dont over eat but just find it very difficult to lose weight.
In 2004 i lost 4 stones through slim fast, adios and exercise but i was constanly exercising and as soon as i ate proper food as opposed to slim fast the weight crept on.
So what advice can you give me. Im moving back to the UK in 2 weeks from Germany while we wait for a visa to oz.
Sunshine 23 hope you start feeling the benefits of the op soon

Glad it all went well, it isn't all that bad is it really. Plenty of rest and a few days you will be as right as rain. I also had a hernia repair and that has made a lot of difference too. Hope the next week you are feeling a little brighter, any questions just pop back and ask.

Re: Lap Band Surgery
Mandy, I can't offer any wise words and I don't want to hijack this thread but I just wanted to say I understand your situation as I'm much the same - diagnosed with underactive thyroid, lost 10kg quickly, reached a plateau, not obese but with a BMI of 26.3 could do to lose a few more kg (or 10!) for the sake of my health, etc.
I eat very healthily and it peeves me that it has no visible results but I do know slimfast is not the answer - I did a lot of that in my twenties (when I was a massive 60kg ) and it messed up my metabolism no end.
Anyway, back to the Lap Band Ladies - we Thyroid Chicks have our own thread.
Hope you're feeling less battered and bruised today, Sunshine. Take care.

Re: Lap Band Surgery
Well, I went for my second appointment with the surgeon today and got my theatre date...23 April. It's much sooner than I though it would be! When I first went last year they told me it was a 2 year wait list, so to get in in only 9 months is fantastic for me. I'm very excited, especially after seeing how well Northernbird has done. (I'm seeing the same guy who did hers).
Couldn't help but think about you, Sunshine. How are you feeling today?

Re: Lap Band Surgery
I think, in the 80s/90s, we were all so hung up on "low fat" that we didn't think about the fact that they replaced the fat - some of which is good and necessary to our well-being - with sugar, which is basically evil.
I went from slimfasts (for a quick half a stone loss, say the week before a holiday) to low-fat ready meals. I was slim but probably malnourished, and I'm sure it all contributed to my autoimmune problems, food intolerances, etc.
Ah, hindsight, it's a wonderful thing.

Re: Lap Band Surgery
Well i went to see GP today to ask for referral letter - however he wants me to try Duromine for 3 months first. I have been on Orlistat and reductil in past so reluctant but because that was in UK he wants to be able to say to Surgeon that i have been trying other methods before resorting to surgery Agh!!!
Anyone tried this ?
