It's a part of Australian culture to be embraced and encouraged.Start them off as early as possible in my opinion.

The first year I was here, daughter was in Year 1 and I was a bit taken aback to realise that they had had a sweepstake in class and all watched the race on telly. However, it's all done in fun and other than having a laid back end to the school day, none of the kids seemed that hyped up about it. YoungSOB came home with a posh hat she'd made for the occasion this year and no clue who had won and didn't care either, she didn't think it was her though

How about sending them in to stand below your balcony at home, you can practice tutting- tutting and they will learn the value of being and behaving like riff-raff.
