Wow, thanks for all of your very kind responses! 
As a celebration the boys and I met my wife from work yesterday and we straight away went to Hungry Jacks for a treat. A modest treat I know but we havent done that as a family in a while and besides - I haven't received a salary yet. After that we strolled along the banks of Lake Ginninderra, enjoying the warm late afternoon sunshine - and a beautiful day it was for that too!
Tons of things are on the "now we can afford..." list but with the probable exception of the flight to Malaysia everything can wait for a bit while we get things better sorted out.
To those still waiting for their lucky break I just want to say don't give up - just keep banging on those doors because you'll be amazed how all of a sudden things can change for you. And don't be afraid to punch a little above your perceived weight as well: Don't underestimate your abilities. Good luck!

If you manage that one, please give me the manual. I can't even get my kids to pick up their clothes off the floor as they shed them where they stand.
