It can not possibly be proven now, so why all the hype?
Who the hell covers up for a paedophile and then waits for the paedophile to die before reporting it?
Esther Rancid has not been in the news for a long time but has now reared her ugly mush!! Why the hell has she kept quiet?

It might have been impossible for the victims to raise the alarm in the 70's and 80's, but there surely has been plenty of opportunity to do so since then.
I cannot think of any logical reason why they would be so terrified of 84 year old Jimmy Saville that they could not bring this up as recently as a year ago, i.e. in his lifetime rather than wait until now. I am sure there would have been one journalist willing to run with the story.
I can see no purpose of bringing this up now; the accused cannot defend themseles, it will not achieve punishment and it will not stop the same thing happening to anyone else.

If he was abusing children, and a lot of people had suspicions and did nothing, it just goes to show how "untouchable" he was.
I don't agree with trial by media and of course he is not here to defend himself, but so many people with stories is hard to ignore.

I have worked with lots of sexual abuse survivors. It doesn't surprise me at all that they have waited until he is dead. They were probably terrified of him and his powerful friends (he was a mason), terrified that nobody would believe them and terrified of having to face him in court.

More recently, had they gone to press just as they have now, it would be in the public eye and if they had mysteriously vanished or whatever else they were frightened of it would be obvious who had got to them. I think they would have been in effect protected by the publicity.
And as for being terrified nobody would believe them, well how has that gone away now he is dead? In fact it is less believable now surely.
And the biggest question now is what exactly are they trying to achieve if not punishment or stopping it from happening to someone else?

I have lost count of sexual assault cases with multiple alleged victims that HAVE gone to court and the case hasn't been proven, to find Jimmy Saville guilty by media and not by trial doesn't sit we'll with me. I feel sorry for the victims of any crime and it is likely these victims could be telling the truth, but the real truth will never be known. It's a sad tale all the way round.

Now then, now then.
Those of us who grew up in the UK in the 70's and 80's knew Jimmy Saville as one of Britains best known celebrities. He presented Top of the pops and Jim'll fix it, amongst other things. He was also well known for his charity work.
Saville died last year, and since then, a former detective has conducted an investigation into his alleged sexual abuse of teenage girls.
Esther Rantzen says that rumours were rife in the industry about Saville's preferences for young girls and several women have come forward to say that they were abused by him.
The general theme seems to be that while he was alive, people thought he was untouchable. Back in the 70's the culture of silence was a strong one and people didn't feel able to speak out.
So far, 5 seperate women claim to have been sexually assaulted by him.
One BBC presenter claims that she walked into a room and saw him with his tongue in a teenager's mouth.
Another presenter says he knew Saville was abusing girls but didn't speak out because he feared for his career.
Coleen Nolan claims to have been groped by him whilst performing on Top of the pops.
The difficulty is of course, that Saville is dead now and cannot defend himself.
However, Coleen Nolan says that she thinks people should listen to the alleged victims as she thinks things may have been worse for her if she hadn't had the support of her sisters. She says that she was never left alone with him.
What are people's thoughts?

Re: Was Jimmy Saville a paedophile?
Times have changed a lot since the 70's and 80's regarding attitudes to sexual abuse of children, however, this subject is still taboo to some extent and for many victims they are too afraid or ashamed to tell anyone. If nothing else, these allegations will bring the whole subject into the public's eye and will help to highlight this terrible crime.

Good excuse.....there's the ABC journalist who is also using the same excuse! He was prosecuted though and found guilty - he's now awaiting his sentence. Maybe he is not as wealthy and influential as Pete Townsend! It will be interesting to see what he gets.

Re: Was Jimmy Saville a paedophile?
Surely paedophile's prefer young pre-pubescent children.
Not necessarily. Some pedophiles are attracted to young teenagers (14-16 year olds) while others are attracted to pre-pubescent girls (9-10) and others still even younger (toddlers, babies, primary school age)
One of the allegations was from 20yr old [at the time] the woman is 60 now. Not exactly paedophilia is it?
