Re: Irish peeps please - advice needed.
Well IMO life's what you make it, and I don't think it's perfect anywhere. Yes Australia has a fantastic climate, outdoorsy activities and all the rest of it, but remember that those of us who left Ireland also left our families and friends behind, and they're largely irreplaceable. Also, it's amazing how many people come out here and turn for home within the year.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited to be here, but I know that it's up to me to make my life out here a success, it won't all come magically on a plate! By the way, I don't think we have a leg to stand on moaning about the Poles in Ireland when we Irish are over in Australia! |
Re: Irish peeps please - advice needed.
Im not moaning about the poles in ireland i have made some good polish friends that r still in ireland .But the difference with me bein in australia is that im putting my money back in to the economy here in ireland the poles are`nt they r sending as much money as they can get back home and not putting it in2 the economy in ireland and my polish friends told me that .Alot of them r going back to there native country because they have saved enought money and can buy houses in poland .

Reminds me of the wise old saying...."When it happens to someone else, it is an incident, but when it happens to you it is major trauma" About perspective I guess. Bess to remain stoic about it all. |

Thanks Nic I can't say I ever noticed any racism in Belfast. I'm Scots/Irish but the Mrs is Hong Kong Chinese and the only time it even came close to racist abuse was a white transit van slowing down in Bangor of all places and the workmen shouting out the window asking how much I'd paid for her. On the plus side, my M&D were really happy to hear we were moving away from Bangor/Belfast, because they too thought the racism would be shocking in Belfast. As many other posters have said, in australia you have all the same problems you have in NI. There are bogans and chavs and hoons and rednecks. It all depends on the area you live in. Education standards are also a bit variable. Pay is less (generally), tax is higher. The weather is nicer though:D JTL |
Re: Irish peeps please - advice needed.
Hi Nic,
We're living in Ireland at the minute and are heading to Perth at the end of October. I grew up in Laois and my wife grew up in Donegal. We've a 9 month daughter and feel that Australia will have a lot to offer her. Myself and my wife spent a year in Oz on a WHV, 3 months of this in Perth. I remember spending a lot of time outside when I was growing up but that doesn't seem to be the norm in Ireland anymore. The combination of bad weather, growing insecurities and better TV and games consoles means kids are spending more time inside and high levels of obesity are becoming a problem. I'm not saying that life in Oz is guaranteed to be better but with a bit of good weather it at least stands some chance. The Irish economy is suffering harder than most at the minute and it will be a good few years before it will be on the up again. I found the Aussies to be very laid back and very easier to get on with and we're looking forward to sampling a bit of the laid back lifestyle again. One thing that I like that I heard many posters here refer to is the fact that the Aussie educational system is as focused on producing well rounded individuals as it on academic development. I think if you have to choose between Perth and Ireland at the minute there's no contest - Perth wins handsdown. |
Re: Irish peeps please - advice needed.
I think perth is 100% better for ur kids than ireland yes as i said b4 u do come across some racism here even from people from ni to other ni people but it would never compare to growning up in Norn Iron.Perth is the place to be . We should arrange a massive get together in dec at kings park in perth for those of u who r in WA all the paddies together lol :rofl:Anyone interested?
