An invitations to a Bar Mitzvah

My 12 year old has been invited to attend to one of the boys at his school for a Bar Mitzvah, not being jewish we dont know much about the ceremony except when a boy comes of age at 13-years-old he has become a "bar mitzvah" and is recognized by Jewish tradition as having the same rights as a full grown man.
so do we have to get present for him I really have no clue, I was hoping if someone here can help me.

An american slant on the answers can be found at http://www.jewishjournal.com/expo/ar...uests_20090624

As for presents and the talk about money or books, how about :

or

but then again, I'm not exactly the type to give religious indoctrination an easy time. :p
