Nope, you not imaging. If I remember correctly he was a full colonel in the USAAF Eighth Air Force flying B17 Flying Fortesses. After the war he had written into all his contracts that they were not allowed to publicise the fact that he received decorations, unlike Audey Murphey, who the studios heavily publicised as a war hero.

There was a marvellous film with the man who is in my head at least, the British Jimmy Stewart, David Niven. It was about a bomber pilot who was supposed to be dead and in heaven but his angel had missed it. It had amazing cinematography for the time. Any ideas on the name that escapes me?
