Re: I hate.............
A few weeks a year, for the last couple of years?? A way of life...no...
I have lived in Melbourne and Victoria for most of my life...but have also lived in Qld, NT, WA, ACT, NSW and SA....We do have some bad fire seasons, but I wouldnt say it was a way of life...no....most years there are just a few small fires...
Oh, and 2 years ago, I moved BACK to Vic...I am an Aussie...lived here most of my life, as I stated earlier in the thread.
Edit: Oh, and sorry...I dont remember meeting you??? When was that??

I am aware that you are an Aussie. I am also aware that many houses burn down each year in bushfires. We met at crown casino at one of the meet up thingies.

Re: I hate.............
Victoria has been on the news for the last couple of weeks due to bad bush fires and smoke disrupting loads of peoples lives there. Was it all just a lie then? Just because your town or house is in the center of a pentagram and seemingly protected doesn't mean fires here are not a way of life/ Between fires, cyclones, floods, drought and termites I'd say this country is far more extreme in it's weather and has far more disasters across the nation than the UK does anytime.

For example:
Put on the TV in winter in UK and weather forecast generally mentions snow and gale force winds in some place at some point during the season. It doesn't happen ever day or everywhere, but generally speaking *it's a way of life* to accept at some point during winter in UK there will be gale force winds and some snow in some places.
Put on the TV in summer in Aus and weather forecast generally mentions fires in some place at some point during the season. It doesn't happen every day or everywhere, but generally speaking *it's a way of life* to accept at some point during summer in Aus there will be a fire some place somewhere.
Simple really

No, I am sure people are quite able to read about it all on the news, however a little perspective was needed. Like I said, most people wont have any contact with the majority of the things bought up in this thread.
Its got nothing to do with Oz being Utopia, its just bloody common sense...

And yet in my experience, its not "many" and its not "each" year. The couple of years you have been here has been at the end of a few very hot summers and dryer than average winters, so they are bad fire seasons. We get them every couple of decades.

Maybe you should tell Steve Bracks so that he can stop wasting money on all the TV adverts telling people that they need to plan for fires.
Next you'll be telling us that there isn't a drought!
