Possibly it is all surmising drivel ;) :o I noticed in the uk though on a hot day some of the little brick houses were really hard to cool down - small windows, double brick, lots of insulation I guess.
I expected wood houses to be colder (as some are) but my last two wooden houses have surprisingly been far warmer than the brick house I lived in - it was all open plan, windows and tiles though and got very nippy. I imagine the really gappy ones could be worse. I believe most brick houses in WA are double brick. |

(New builds may differ in both cities) Brisbane=Air conditioning main priority, heating far less so Melbourne=Heating main priority, air con far less so? Brisbane=Huge elevated decks to catch breezes Melbourne=More indoor living with summer patio's? In the summer you would fry on an open patio, again, dont know many people whos ent areas are open! Brisbane=Light short clothing to feel more comfortable (i don't own a jacket) Melbourne=Heavy dark clothing to keep out the cold Brisbane=Get up and about early in summer to avoid later morning humidity Melbourne=Stay in bed in winter Most of my Melbourne entries are guesses so I'm sure someone will correct me. I actually love the change of seasons, love lighting the coonara in the cold, love sitting outside in the heat. Autum is just the best here and wouldnt change it for anything :) |

LMAO! I wish...first house on stumps, freezing. Second house on slab, warmer, but not buy much, way easier to keep cool too. Our houses are single brick and that, IMHO is crap :sneaky:
No, simply NOT the case. All new homes are open, and, believe it or not when our summer hits we NEED through breezes just as much as you...40 plus and no breeze isnt funny!.... |

I'm not sure if you missed my comment about "new builds may differ" but I was talking about the traditional melbourne houses - not the new build areas which look similar to new builds anywhere in oz (except more tightly jammed in). I didn't mean patio's open to the sun btw, just on the ground with pergola and small doors out to them. Of course I don't know all of the first 12km of Melbourne....just talking about all the suburbs I caught trams through and walked around/drove around.

Going back to the humidty in Singapore...maybe Asian's don't sweat as much as Westerners as they never look hot and bothered to me! It was a bit of a shock the first time I went to Singapore for work and having to wear smart clothes but at least it's better for us girls as we can wear skirts and dresses.
Talking of housing we stayed in an old terraced house in Freo a few years back and it was 40 each day, if they hadn't of had fans in that house we would have roasted alive! I'm not sure what happened to "The Doctor" during those days but there was no breeze through the house. The windows were all barred so you couldn't open them fully thankfully there were a couple of sashes which opened a little more. We were the end of the terrace so had a few more windows but it must have been hell for the middle ones. Our first place here was a 60's flat, freezing in winter but we managed the heat in summer okay with just a fan. Second place was newish house, bedroom at front with little sun on it so fine. Third was an upside down townhouse, great in Summer! OUR house fine in Summer so far with big eaves and alfresco, we wait to see what winter is like! |
Re: Humidty
Yipppeeee It's stopped raining.... but booo now I have to do a dog crap run
Still bleeding sticky though. We dont have a tumble dryer so we may have to go to the Laundromat to get our heavy load of washing dry. (about 6 laundry baskets full now) Never had to do that before, even in the coolest wettest winter. Clothes line has been full for 3 days now of wet items. |

I don't like excessive humidity but I'm sure your tolerance must change just like qld'ers who freeze there ass off in southern parts when they first arrive. Maybe you have Cairns style humidity happening rather than Brisbane?
Everything is set up to make summers more comfortable in Brisbane whereas I suppose Melbourne is setup to take the sting out of winter. Just like Melbourne isn't always freezing in winter, Brisbane isn't always really humid in summer. It comes and goes. I can sit outside on the deck in summer surrounded by trees, with the music on, a cool drink, a good book and maybe the deck ceiling fans on or a light breeze, a shot of mozzie spray and all is good with the world. Summer for some in Brisbane is the worst season just like winter in Melbourne is the worst. In Brisbane there is always a non-humid summer on the way after the official summer ends just like there is in Melbourne after the winter ends :) Me, overall I like summer as well....just has a nice feel about it apart from the odd overly humid periods - reminds me of holidays and thunderstorms and other stuff. That's just me though. One bonus is we don't get those annoying bloody flies you get in dry summer parts. I agree with bc that work clothes and public transport are not great combinations though finally almost every bus is air conditioned so not as bad as it was - need a bus stop with a shady tree. I just ride a bike and shower at work  |
