Default How often do you have your aircon on?

Well it's bloody hot here today, 35 degrees at one point. I hate putting the aircon on but I just couldn't help myself.

My husband would have it on as soon as he comes home from work until we go to bed in in this heat (but he does have a manual job so he loves to cool down).

Why do I feel guilty about using it? Is it because I'm a tight arse and just think about how much it's costing me

Yeah probably

I don't use ours much really, now and again in temps above 35c. I think i have got used to the heat and it doesn't affect me too much now.
When we do put it on we get too cold too soon

Just put ours on for the first time in the 3 months that we have been here. Will be giving up my weekly vanilla milkshake at the shopping mall to pay for it!

Actually, here I am sat in the family room on the computer - without the aircon.

My lad is sitting in the front room with his mates watching a dvd - with the aircon on. I went in to sit down and cool off and there they were all comfortable on my sofa nice and cool

Every night (it is multi-phase though - ducted zones) for about 20 minutes each evening to cool our little boys room and the study (2 PCs running) room also. we've been doing this for about 1.5 months now. I'll be interested to see what this has cost us?

We did not use AC last 3 summers, this one using for 4/5 hours most days, limit the use as VERY expensive to run.

Was in brisbane this morning maroochydore this afternoon, official temps on the gov website are 31 and 28, it is much hotter than that.

Looks like the traditional qld summers have returned, although it hasnt rained for a few days and this is not that humid, cant wait for that to come back again. I spent 15 minutes in the sun/shade yesterday, no sunblock but a hat, and am burnt from that.

I am finding the heat at the moment more like perth or melb heat, more dry, not humid like it was last week, but I guess the winds are coming from the west so it would be. Furnace type breeze at the moment, supposed to change to SE tonight.

we now have two reverse cycle units (had evaporative at the other house). So far I've had them on once, which was Sunday and incredibly hot.

I find a dip in the pool is better than any airconditioning for cooling off

Real difference of opinion in our house. The Bloke loves it, I loathe it - dries the air out, and I don't like the draught that comes from it.
I'm more than happy to compromise and let him use it as long as its not on all the time (thereby hangs the problem!) and I'm on nights a lot so he can have it to his hearts content then.
At least the one in this house cuts out at a certain temperature. Where he lived when I first moved here there was no temp control so it just kept getting colder and colder - I remember typing on BE with blue fingers, wearing woolly gloves in mid summer

We have used ours twice this summer so far. I normally just open up the doors and windows but if it hits 35 plus and no breeze then we struggle. Our most expensive bill last year for 2 months was $506 which includes running our pool.

I use it when I need it and don't when I don't.

Have you tried having a bucket or bowl of water in the room as well. Should help

Has anyone managed with just ceiling fans? I've heard people saying how noisy and environmentally unfriendly it is and in the old days they just had fans.

We had just ceiling fans in our rental and I would never ever do it again. Mine isn't noisy, not sure of the environmental impact.

I would kill for ceiling fans! Have neither fans nor aircon here in Sydney but in Asia we had both and hardly used the aircon. If we did it was set at 26C and just on for a few hours a night in the bedroom.

Aircon dries my skin and gives me sinus and headache problems - I avoid it.

Interesting. So Northernbird did you think a fan was not enough?

Phew. You must be sweltering in Sydney. Can you use stand up fans at least?
