So how long does lettuce take from start to finish and do you faff around with all that transplanting bit they used to do in UK?
we've failed miserably with cucumbers and peppers ...........the kids go through loads, so we thought we would try to grow them. got them into seedlings (quite a decent size as well), but then they all died............i havent got very green fingers. we will probably try again, and see what happens.

try again with the cucs, dont water the leaves, put a bit of manure around the base - the baby type fruiting ones are great - you get a fair few fruits so if u eat alot plant 2 or 3.
Have you tried eggplant too.
Capsicum should do OK - maybe the variety......maybe not sunny enough a spot or too sunny?
Good luck

If you like Basil, try lemon basil - its lush

i think it was too sunny, it was shaded during the morning, but come lunch time and the patio area round the back of the house gets all the sun. when the seedlings are up about 2 inches, should we have seperated them? we were watering the whole plants, including the leaves, so maybe thats where we went wrong as well?

The local agricultural university where we lived used to recommend you got loft insulation glass fibre and put it under all your pots as it works the same as the posh watering mats, you water the glass fibre then the plants suck it up. Probably makes for very hairy cucumbers etc. though.

Hi....

morning sun is best and some afternoon...all day sun is too much

Seperate them b4 planting them....give the soil a really good soak and gently tease plants apart - well ones which will get big like cucs, toms, courgettes, lesfy things are ok a bit more together.

Did the cucs leaves go mouldy - its humidity and watering the leaves adds to it

Good luck

With Aus drippers wouldn't be watering leaves much anyway.

The idea of opening up new gardening experiences is something that excites me. I'd love to be able to grow lemons

I don't suppose I've got much hope of growing raspberries though

In pots, we've tried growing: Tomatoes (about 4 different varieties), chillies (2 varieties), green onions, basil (2 varieties), thyme, garlic chives, oregano, chard.
Had a couple of ripe tomatoes and that was it... everything died!!
We're trying strawberries now.

You need big pots with a wetting agent at the bottom so their roots go low.

Yep, and mix some sand it to help retain a bit of moisture too...

happy potting

Put a thin tube down the middle of the pot too, so it waters from the base ... not just the top.
Recommend a bag of Zoo Poo to mix in with the compost. Most veggies love that.

We've had success with growing tomatoes and limes, but the second lot of tomatoes aren't doing very well I'll keep hoping though.

Strawberries - we had about one last year and two this year.

Chilli plants have been quite succesful, and plan to grow some more from seed once I get round to sowing them

When we have a decent garden, I'm planning to grow things properly in beds rather than in pots so we may have more success then, fingers crossed.
