Hi Rachel
Can't really help you as I'm not there yet (going in September) & have never been, but just wanted to welcome you to BE!
However from what people have said on here I get the impression it's not much cheaper than the UK, if at all. Property prices are soaring, everyone goes on about the price of lettuce & bananas on here  It seems because there aren't as many supermarket chains, therefore little competition, they keep their prices quite high. I believe eating out is cheaper.
You may get a more helpful reply later when people in Oz are up.
Leigh :)

Hi Rachel

We're nearing the end of our skilled visa too - my hubbies an electrician. We've just got back from a holiday in perth and sorry to put a downer on things, but the main expense is going to be buying property. House prices are rocketing and we're really concerned about this. You're looking at approx $400k for a 4x2 house - even slightly more inland. Don't delay on getting out there, but you will get $7k from the govt as a first time buyer. Try logging onto google.com.au and type in recruitment agencies and search for jobs. Also - this site is excellent. I'm a new user as of today and have now been on my laptop 5 hours! Please feel free to reply with any other quests! Other than that - we didn't notice anything majorly expensive. It's all about shopping around. I don't think we'll be shipping furniture etc as there's an ikea in perth and we'll make do with that for a while!!

Josie :)

Hi Leigh

Thanks for your reply

Thanks for welcoming me aswell. What made you decide to go to OZ, especially if it isnt any cheaper than the UK. I am a bit worried about the wages side of it, as I was told that the cost of living was cheaper therefore wages were less

Hi Rachel

I think, in general, things are cheaper and comparatively speaking property is much cheaper, but i've been monitoring property since christmas over the internet and it is going up! Having said that - if you look around you can still get many nice properties near the coast for $300-350k. We live on an old council estate and there's kids on asbo's around - we may need a bigger mortgage, but the fact it's quieter, friendlier, has nicer weather and more outdoor activities is worth the move! We've got about £50k equity in our house and luckily (for a change lol) no debts to clear. as a result we will have a nice deposit. It's still scary though and i keep checking and rechecking my sums!!!! We're not really fussed where we live and quite favour a little more inland to have more space and possibly in a few years a couple of horses. Having said that by the beach would be great too! Have you been over to Oz before? By the way - although i'm not a footie fan, but do watch the world cup - Australia v Brazil are on at 4.30 - i know who i'll be supporting today!!

Hi Rachel

There are many reasons we have decided to move to Oz, main one being a better lifestyle for us as a family.
You say you've 2 children. Have a look at this thread http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=364535. Got to be a main reason to go don't you think?
My OH was offered a job in Perth, all location fees paid, it just seemed too good of an opportunity to turn down.
When are you thinking of going?

[QUOTE=JosieJ]Hi Josie

Thanks for replying

Whats your update, have you got your visa and was it really hard to get. We have 2 children and I just feel that the way of life for us and them willl be so much better. We live in Essex in the countryside and it is beautiful but just feel that everything out there would be great. What I am worried about is the low wages expecially if property is getting more expensive. When are you thinking of going?

Have seen footie and Australia lost, hope that is not a omen!!!!!!

Hi Leigh

Thanx for that link, really interesting read. My husband is a chef and am still trying to convince him it is the right move. He is worried abut wages and jobs etc. We both agreed to go with getting the visa but as yet cant seem to get him to pin down when we will be going.Any ideas of how to get a stubborn husband realise what a good opportunity this could be

Hi Rachel

I feel you have to think very carefully about your reasons for wanting to come to Perth. If it is becuse you think it will be a cheaper way of life then maybe like many others you will be dissapointed. House prices have risen dramatically in the last couple of years (and especially in the last 6 months) many people are having to take far larger mortgages than they anticipated. Wages as you have rightly said will possibly be lower plus often you have to start at a lower level than you have left. Household bills are not that cheap, petrol has doubled in the last 3 years and filling the tank on a 4x4 will cost you $100+ on a family car probably around $60. Weekly shopping probably around $250 per week plus a trip to the bottle shop.

Yes Perth is a great place to live and a fab place to raise your kids, but if your main reason for coming here is that you will have more disposable income then do your homework first as it may not work out that way. Think hard too on wheather you will be happy to stay in Perth and holiday in places that are a drivable distance away, if not then you will have to be prepared for big bills, for example my husband is off to Melbourne in a few weeks with work, we thought about the kids and i going too, flights alone for me and 3 kids will cost us $2500, thats more than a months take home pay for many people, so we won't be going.

Sorry if this sounds negative and not what you want to hear but "cheapness" is not a reason to relocate to the other side of the world. :)

Thanks for your reply

Its good to hear from you. Yes I admit one of our reasons was the cost of living and I amn aware now that things arent as cheap as previously thought, houses prices seem to better than the UK, ie you get more fro your money, our main reason is the lifestyle for the children. I am worried about the low wages. How long have you been out there and where are you?

Rachel

perhaps you could try sending a pm to a lady who calls herself Chef69 she has been here a few months now and i know she found getting a job here quite easy, i remember she started a thread a few weeks back and in it said that she had to turn down several jobs, so perhaps she may be able to give you an idea of wages and conditions for chefs.

House prices here are i suppose better than some parts of the UK but it very much depends on where you are coming from, many people live in areas where house prices aren't that high and as a result don;t have masses of equity in their property which they can bring over to get themselves started, how easy it will be for you here financially speaking may well depend on where you are and how lucky you have been with your property.
