Default House Prices, Economy, Job Ads, Skills Shortages to come....

Managing the risks. As expectations of an interest rate rise as soon as next month build, Jonathan Reeves says the future of Australian house prices remains unpredictable. "The relatively short period of Australian housing price index data from the mid 1980s is not sufficient to make a reliable inference on the relationship between Australian house prices and fundamental factors such as interest rates, population growth and changing incomes.

THE positive signs for the Australian economy are strengthening, after business confidence soared to a six-year high, while both the stockmarket and Australian dollar came close to setting 12-month records. A surprising bounce in the NAB monthly business survey showed business conditions in August rose to the highest point since 2003, after confidence increased in almost all of the survey categories.

The number of job advertisements rose for the first time since April 2008, the latest sign that the Australian economy is emerging from its shallow downturn - but adding to the prospect that interest rates will soon rise. The total number of jobs advertised increased 4.1 per cent in August to an average of 130,326 a week, according to the ANZ Bank's monthly survey.

Jobs survive but skills take a hit The good news is that unemployment is not expected to reach the official forecast of 8.5 per cent in this downturn. The bad news is that because employers are not spending on training, there will be shortages of skilled people as soon as the economy improves.

So mostly good stuff there then. Excellent news.

Of course it is - a pound only costs about $1.95 now.

Isn't that considerably cheaper than when it cost $2.50..
