Re: HELP! DISTRESSED SOCIAL WORKER!
this is interesting as I am also a social worker who has also been told about the dispw not being "enough" to get a sw job:(
i will probably look at doing youth work instead, although again I dont know whether my qualifications will be recognised. I have emailed a few agencies asking whether they would accept a job application form from me, but only one has got back, and I have to say that was good news as the answer was YES:thumbsup: I really didnt realise that the top up course would cost $6000:ohmy: jesus, thats a lot of money. I really dont know what I will end up doing, but I would really like to stay either working with teenagers, young offenders or domestic abuse. lets hope at least one of us gets a job:confused: bec |

Can anyone help a distressed UK qualified social worker get a job in Perth!!!!!! I arrived here 3 months ago, with 1 years post qualifying experience in the UK, only to be told that I can't get a social worker job without going to uni for 1 year at a cost of nearly $6000! Has anyone else had the same experience or can offer any suggestions? I'm going mad here!!!!!!! Can't help with jobs in Perth but if you have experience in child protection and fancy working in Queensland, the Dept of Child Safety is offering the following: In partnership with the University of Queensland, we offer graduate bridging scholarships to people aspiring to work as a Child Safety Officer (CSO) or aspiring to work as a CSO. Scholarships covering full tuition fees, travel and accommodation expenses associated with attending residential schools at the respective universities will be offered to successful applicants. These applicants will undertake a Graduate Certificate in Human Services (Child Protection Practice) at the University of Queensland or the Postgraduate Certificate of Child Protection Practice at James Cook University. Might be interesting to those British qualified social workers who have been assessed as Welfare Workers. I have worked as a CSO and the work was pretty similar to UK. Checkout their website at: http://www.childsafety.qld.gov.au/ca...olarships.html Good luck BS:) |

Is your qualification DIPSWA? WA requires their social workers to have a degree in Social Work. Mate of mine came out on a DIPSWA and had to go to Uni out here to get the equivalent of a degree.
However before I left the UK I seem to recall Social Work was now a degree course but only 3 years, out here it's 4 years. Once qualified there's a shit load of SW jobs but in the meantime you could get some work doing other stuff. |

My sis did the Postgraduate Degree in SW in the UK and currently has 3 years post reg experience. She is in criminal justice in the UK. Anyone any ideas if there's such areas here in Oz and if they would know off hand whether this was enough to qualify out here? Cheers Ginny |

Definitely no macho Assiu sheep-shearers will want me around  Like others, will probably look for some kind of youth work, community mental health/sexual health role, I quite fancy that :) |
