Definitely not acceptable in any work situation that I am familiar with. I think it is deeply unprofessional, you won't see any executives or high flyers sitting around wearing headphones.

I expect my team and my colleagues to be focusing on their work and to be properly interacting with the environment and people around them. I have pulled team members aside and told them I do not expect to see them in headphones again.

They can in certain circumstances help people concentrate, especially for fine detail work.

I wear them quite often, however I make absoutely sure that I can hear people who wish to communicate with me, and that they dont bother anyone else. So I voted yes with the proviso if anyone wishes to communicate with you, you can hear that person first time.

BTW I recommend these....

Easily the best headphones I've owned... Koss Porta pro's are darn good as well.

Being the only person in the building on a night shift means no need for headphones - and I get to choose the music. Think Eminem might be frowned upon in the daytime

I loved those moments, solo night shifts, volume up full, Pink Floyd's The Wall at its best

There's a blast from the past - might add that to the play list for the week - 6 more nights to go

I would :) If you are in a building with good (or even reasonable) accoustics, you can't beat it. Any Pink Floyd is fab, but The Wall is just phenomenal

I have plenty of time - it's a 7 to 7 shift, and the first people in don't get here until around 6.30

You are so lucky being solo shift, I now have at least one other person on shift, so the music nights are at an end. I did get one guy to let me have Top Gun on the other night, but I don't usually get to work with him, so 99% of the time it headphones :(

The security guard stops by at the start of the shift around 7.30pm, and occassionally there's people working late, but everyone's usually gone by 8 at the latest. Have to turn the volume down if the phone rings but that's it. The site techs sometimes ring for a chat, or check in via communicator, and the guard will check with me at regular intervals through the night. Not bad :)

Same as it used to be for us with security etc - only now we have two or three of us on shift instead of one :(

It's not usually busy enough for more than 1 here - but if they get the growth they want, it may change. Had a moment earlier where 3 sites were in alarm at the same time
